24 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch on larger needles
Using smaller needles, cast on 80 stitches. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 4 rows.
Change to larger needles and work in stockinette stitch until piece measures 8 inches from cast on edge, ending with a wrong side row.
Shape armholes: Bind off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Continue in stockinette stitch until armhole measures 4 inches, ending with a wrong side row.
Shape shoulders: Bind off 12 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining stitches.
Using smaller needles, cast on 40 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 4 rows.
Change to larger needles and work in stockinette stitch.

Work even until sleeve measures 7 inches, ending with a wrong side row.
Shape cap: Bind off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each end of every following 4th row 7 more times. Bind off remaining stitches.
Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Pick up stitches along fronts and neck edge and work 2 rows of garter stitch. Sew on buttons.
