Finished sole length: 3.5 inches (0-6 months size)

Instructions

  1. Sole: With black yarn and larger needles, cast on 36 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 10 rows.
  2. Continue in stockinette stitch, decreasing 1 stitch at each end of the next row and every following 4th row until 20 stitches remain.
  3. Work even until piece measures 3 inches from cast on edge.
  4. Shape toe: Decrease 1 stitch at each end of the next row and every following alternate row until 8 stitches remain.
  5. Bind off. Sew back seam.
  6. Upper: With white yarn and smaller needles, pick up and knit 40 stitches along the top edge of the sole.
  7. Work in stockinette stitch for 6 rows.
  8. Shape heel: Row 1 - Knit 7, ssk, knit 8, k2tog, knit 7 (38 stitches).
  9. Row 2 - Purl.
  10. Row 3 - Knit 6, ssk, knit 6, k2tog, knit 6 (34 stitches).
  11. Row 4 - Purl.
  12. Row 5 - Knit 5, ssk, knit 4, k2tog, knit 5 (30 stitches).
  13. Row 6 - Purl.
  14. Row 7 - Knit 4, ssk, knit 2, k2tog, knit 4 (26 stitches).
  15. Row 8 - Purl.
  16. Row 9 - Knit 3, ssk, k2tog, knit 3 (22 stitches).
  17. Row 10 - Purl.
  18. Row 11 - Knit 2, ssk, k2tog, knit 2 (18 stitches).
  19. Row 12 - Purl.
  20. Row 13 - Knit 1, ssk, k2tog, knit 1 (14 stitches).
  21. Row 14 - Purl.
  22. Row 15 - Ssk, k2tog, ssk (8 stitches).
  23. Row 16 - Purl.
  24. Row 17 - Ssk, k2tog (4 stitches).
  25. Bind off. Fold upper in half and sew back seam. Attach contrasting color laces.
