Black Cat Amigurumi with a Gorgeous Crown
Detailed crochet amigurumi pattern for a sitting black cat (approx. 20cm / 8in tall) wearing a removable golden crown. Worked in continuous rounds with optional embroidery and bead details. Designed for a compact, firm fabric so the cat keeps shape and the crown sits neatly.
Finished Size
Approximately 20cm / 8in tall when sitting (head and body combined). Crown height approx. 3.5cm / 1.4in.
Materials
- Main yarn: Worsted/Aran weight (Category 4) - Black: 200 yards / 183 m (one 100g skein). Metric: 100 g skein ≈ 183 m. Imperial: ≈200 yd.
- Crown yarn: Sport/worsted contrast "gold" or metallic yarn: 50 yards / 46 m (approx. 25 g). If using a thin metallic, less yardage is needed.
- Accent yarns: small scraps white (for eye highlight) and pink (for inner ear) — ~5–10 yards / 5–9 m each.
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill (low-lint) — about 70–100 g total (depends on firmness).
- Safety eyes: 9–12 mm (recommended 10 mm) or embroidered eyes for a child-safe toy.
- Embroidery thread or contrasting yarn for nose, mouth, whiskers (black on black won’t show; use subtle dark charcoal or gray for definition).
- Stitch marker, yarn needle, small blunt tip scissors, optional pins for assembly.
- Beads or small sequins for crown decoration (optional), and small elastic or snap if you want the crown removable but secured.
Hook & Needle Sizes (US, UK Old, Metric)
Primary (amigurumi tight fabric): Crochet hook US: E/4 (3.5 mm) — UK (old): 9; Metric: 3.5 mm. If you want a slightly firmer fabric, drop to 3.25 mm (US D/3, UK old 10). If your gauge is loose, go to 3.0 mm.
Alternate (for looser softer fabric or crown): Crochet hook US: G/6 (4.0 mm) — UK (old): 8; Metric: 4.0 mm.
Knitting needles (optional if making a knitted crown): US 6 (4.0 mm) — UK 8; Metric: 4.0 mm.
Yarn Weights & Equivalents
Recommended: Worsted/Aran (Category 4). Example skein info shown above. If using DK/light (Category 3), adjust hook down 0.5mm and expect a smaller finished toy. Imperial & Metric examples: 100 g / 183 m (200 yd) worsted skein; 25 g / 46 m small metallic/gold skein.
Gauge
8 sc × 10 rows = 5 cm / 2 in in single crochet (amigurumi, measured flat) using 3.5 mm hook. Your gauge will affect finished size—adjust hook if needed to keep a firm fabric so stuffing doesn’t show.
Abbreviations (US terms; UK equivalents in parentheses)
- ch — chain
- sc — single crochet (UK = dc)
- inc — single crochet increase (sc 2 in same st)
- dec — invisible decrease (sc2tog) (UK = dec)
- sl st — slip stitch
- st/sts — stitch/stitches
- FO — fasten off
- R — round
- MR — magic ring
Notes
- Work in continuous (spiral) rounds unless instructed to join.
- Use a stitch marker; move marker up each round.
- For safety-eye placement, insert eyes between R8–R10 of the head, approx. 6–8 sts apart depending on eye size; pattern specifies placement for 10 mm eyes.
- Embroider nose and mouth before final stuffing and closing for cleaner lines.
Pattern
Head (worked in black)
Make 1.
- R1: MR, 6 sc (6)
- R2: inc around (12)
- R3: (sc 1, inc) around (18)
- R4: (sc 2, inc) around (24)
- R5: (sc 3, inc) around (30)
- R6: (sc 4, inc) around (36)
- R7–R11: sc around (36) — place safety eyes between R9 and R10, spaced 6–8 sts apart (for 10 mm use 7 sts apart). Add a small white stitched highlight later if desired.
- R12: (sc 4, dec) around (30)
- R13: (sc 3, dec) around (24)
- R14: (sc 2, dec) around (18)
- Stuff firmly but leave room for shaping.
- R15: (sc 1, dec) around (12)
- R16: dec around to close (6). FO and weave tail through remaining sts, pull tight and hide tail. Finish stuffing firmly before final closing.
Body (worked in black)
Make 1. Stuff firmly as you go. Join to head by sewing or crochet directly—this pattern sews pieces for easier shaping.
- R1: MR, 6 sc (6)
- R2: inc around (12)
- R3: (sc 1, inc) around (18)
- R4: (sc 2, inc) around (24)
- R5: (sc 3, inc) around (30)
- R6–R11: sc around (30)
- R12: (sc 3, dec) around (24)
- R13: sc around (24)
- R14: (sc 2, dec) around (18)
- R15–R18: sc around (18)
- R19: (sc 1, dec) around (12)
- Stuff very firmly, then R20: dec around to close partially leaving an opening to sew to the head, or leave completely closed and sew head to body by whipstitching top of body into head base. FO and weave tail.
Ears (worked in black with optional pink inner)
Make 2.
- R1: MR, 6 sc (6)
- R2: (sc 1, inc) around (9)
- R3: sc around (9)
- R4: (sc 2, inc) around (12)
- R5: sc around (12)
- Flatten ear and fold slightly to form triangular ear shape — seam base with slip stitch or whipstitch. If you want a pink inner: make 2 small oval inserts: ch4, sc in 2nd ch from hook 3 sc, turn and sc across 3 sc, FO; sew pink patch into center of ear before attaching.
Front Paws / Back Legs
Make 4 (2 front paws slightly smaller if you want).
- R1: MR, 6 sc (6)
- R2: inc around (12)
- R3–R6: sc around (12) — stuff lightly
- R7: dec around to close (6). FO leaving long tail for sewing.
Tail (worked in black)
Make 1. A tapered tail—adjust length to preference.
- Ch 2 and 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6)
- sc around for 18–26 rounds (depending on desired tail length), gradually decrease by 1 sc every 6–8 rows near tip to taper, end with 6–4 sc and FO, leaving long tail. Optionally curve tail by inserting thin pipe cleaner before closing or by sewing a slight curve when attaching.
Crown (worked in gold)
Make 1. This crown is removable—worked in a small circumference to sit on the head. Use slightly thinner yarn or go down a hook size for neat stitches. Standard crown fits head circumference ~28–30 sts around at base. Adjust stitches to fit your head size.
- Using gold yarn and 3.5 mm or 3.25 mm hook:
- Ch 31 (or adjust to match head base circumference; crown base should be approx. 28–34 sts). Join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
- R1: ch1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st to first sc (31)
- R2–R3: sc around (31) — this builds base band.
- R4: *ch3, skip 1, sl st in next st* around to create small arches. (This forms points.)
- R5: Working into each arch: (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) into chain-3 arch to make pointed petals. FO and weave ends.
- Edging: Add picot edge if desired: attach yarn, *(sl st, ch 3, sl st in last st)* along crown top points to create sparkle. Sew small beads or sequins at each crown point using thread or a small stitch.
Facial Features
- Nose: Embroider a small triangular nose using pink or dark gray yarn: 3–4 sts to form an upside down small V. Place between eyes about 3 rounds below eye line.
- Mouth: Using a tapestry needle and same yarn as nose, stitch a small straight line down from nose and two short curved lines for mouth. Keep stitches small and tidy.
- Whiskers: Use thin black embroidery thread or fishing line for a subtle sculpted whisker. Knot on inside and secure with a dab of fabric glue if needed; keep whiskers short for safety if toy for small child.
Assembly
- Position head on body: Center the head over the body top. Use pins to align. Whipstitch or mattress stitch head to body through the base rounds; use tight, even stitches so the join is invisible. Alternatively, crochet the body onto the head by placing them together and working sc through both loops.
- Sew ears to top of head symmetrically. Use photos as reference or place ears 6–8 sts apart on top of the head and angle slightly forward.
- Sew front paws to front of body, about 3–4 rounds down from head join, making them sit slightly forward. Sew back legs to the lower sides so the cat sits stable.
- Attach tail at lower back center. Use extra stitches to secure and form a smooth join. Optionally insert a wire or pipe cleaner for poseable tail.
- Attach crown: either slide gently onto head or place on top and stitch a couple of discreet tacking stitches so it’s removable but stable. If making crown removable, add a small snap or button inside to anchor.
Finishing & Tips
- Weave in all ends securely; hide tails inside stuffing.
- Use dark charcoal or soft gray contrast for embroidered features so they show up on black fabric.
- To brighten eyes, stitch a tiny white dot for highlight (1–2 stitches) opposite the light source direction.
- Steam-block crown lightly if using metallic yarn to shape points; avoid steaming the main amigurumi toy directly if it contains safety eyes or plastic bits.
- If making for a small child, replace safety eyes and bead details with embroidered eyes and stitched decorations only.
Variations
- Make the crown detachable as a headband by adding an elastic loop under the crown and a discreet button inside the head to anchor it.
- Change crown color to silver, white or pastel for a softer look. Add pearl-style beads for regal effect.
- Knit a small crown using 4.0 mm needles in the round: cast on 32 sts, work 4 rounds in 1x1 rib, then shape points with yarn overs and decreases as preferred; seam closed and embellish.
Troubleshooting
- If stuffing shows through, use a smaller hook to tighten fabric or add more stuffing in small amounts to fill gaps.
- If crown is too loose, pick a smaller hook or use a slightly thicker yarn for the crown band.
Care
Spot clean with damp cloth and mild soap. Hand wash gently and reshape; air dry flat. Avoid soaking metallic threads; check care instructions for yarns used.
