One size fits most children (ages 2-6)
Ear Flaps (make 2):
Cast on 5 stitches.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1, K1 (7 stitches).
Continue in this manner, increasing 1 stitch at the beginning and end of every other row until you have 15 stitches. Work even until ear flap measures approximately 3 inches, ending with a wrong side row.
Next row: K1, SSK, knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1 (13 stitches).
Repeat last row until 5 stitches remain. Bind off.
Hat:
Using straight needles, cast on 88 stitches.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1 inch.
Switch to stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) and work even until hat measures approximately 4 inches from cast on edge.
Shape crown:
Switch to double-pointed needles when necessary.
Round 1: *K6, K2tog; repeat from * around (77 stitches).
Rounds 2-6: Knit.
Round 7: *K5, K2tog; repeat from * around (66 stitches).
Rounds 8-12: Knit.
Continue in this manner, decreasing 9 stitches on every knit round until 11 stitches remain. Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
Finishing:
Sew ear flaps to the sides of the hat, positioning them approximately 2 inches from the ribbing. Attach a pom pom to the top of the hat if desired.
Weave in all ends and block the hat to shape, if desired.
