Needles and Hooks
- Knit needles (circular for comfort): Primary Needle A — US 15 (10.0 mm) = UK Old 000; Optional Needle B for looser drape — US 17 (12.0 mm) = UK Old n/a; Cable length 36–60 in (91–152 cm)
- Crochet hooks: US N/P-15 (10.0 mm) and/or US P/Q (15.0 mm); metric 10.0–15.0 mm (UK Old sizes are not used for hooks)
- Notions: 2 locking stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape, blocking tools (optional)
Gauge
- Knit (broken rib, lightly blocked): 8 sts x 12 rows = 4 in (10 cm). Stockinette reference: ≈ 9 sts x 12 rows = 4 in (10 cm)
- Crochet (hdc in back loop only): 7 sts x 6 rows = 4 in (10 cm)
- Adjust to match width; change needle/hook size if needed (see Swatching)
Abbreviations
- k = knit; p = purl; k1, p1 = 1x1 rib
- CO = cast on; BO = bind off; RS/WS = right/wrong side
- pm/sm = place/slip marker
- ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; blo = back loop only; sl st = slip stitch
Swatching
Knit: With Needle A, CO 20 sts. Work seed border 5 sts each side with broken-rib center (see pattern rows) for 5 in (13 cm). Block and measure in center. Crochet: Ch 24; hdc blo swatch 5 in (13 cm). Adjust tool size to meet gauge.
Knit Version — Broken Rib with Seed Borders
Construction: Flat in one piece. Maintain a 10-st seed-stitch border on each edge (20 sts total). Body is broken rib that resists curling and drapes beautifully in super bulky.
Knit Cast On
- Lap: CO 80 sts
- Throw: CO 100 sts
- Oversized: CO 120 sts
Use a long-tail CO on US 15 (10.0 mm, UK Old 000). Optional: hold tail double for a cushy edge, then drop tail.
Set Up
- Row 1 (RS): Work Seed Border 10 sts as [k1, p1] x5, pm; knit to last 10 sts, pm; work Seed Border 10 as [k1, p1] x5. This establishes borders and body.
- Row 2 (WS): Work Seed Border 10 as [p1, k1] x5, sm; work body as [k1, p1] rib to marker, sm; work Seed Border 10 as [p1, k1] x5.
Main Pattern
- Row 1 (RS): Seed Border 10 to marker, sm; knit all body sts to marker, sm; Seed Border 10 to end.
- Row 2 (WS): Seed Border 10 to marker, sm; work [k1, p1] across body to marker, sm; Seed Border 10 to end.
Repeat Rows 1–2 to desired length. Approximate row counts at stated gauge: Lap ≈ 150 rows (50 in/127 cm), Throw ≈ 180 rows (60 in/152 cm), Oversized ≈ 210 rows (70 in/178 cm). Measure length relaxed on a flat surface.
Bind Off and Finishing (Knit)
- BO in pattern on a RS row: in border, continue seed; in body, knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as you bind off. Keep BO relaxed.
- Weave in ends along columns of rib. Gently block: wool—soak 10–15 min, press in towel, lay flat to dimensions; acrylic—pin to size and lightly steam hover, do not touch/press.
- Optional edge polish: single-crochet once around with 10.0 mm hook, placing ~1 sc per garter/border ridge and ~1 sc per row up the sides; or attach 6–8 in (15–20 cm) fringe every 2–3 sts along cast-on and bind-off edges.
Knit Stitch Multiple and Custom Width
Total sts = 20 border sts (10 each side) + body sts. Body must be an even number. For a custom width W inches at 2 sts per inch, choose Total CO ≈ 2 x W; if Total CO is odd, add 1 to make it even. Example: 54 in ≈ 108 sts total = 20 border + 88 body.
Crochet Version — Ribbed HDC with SC Borders
Construction: Flat in rows with 5-st single-crochet borders at each side; body worked in hdc blo for plush ribs.
Foundation Chain
- Lap: ch 70
- Throw: ch 88
- Oversized: ch 106
Hook: US N/P-15 (10.0 mm); adjust up to US P/Q (15.0 mm) if fabric is tight.
Set Up Row (WS)
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn. You now have one row of sc and the correct stitch count for your size.
Main Pattern (Crochet)
- Row 1 (RS): Sc across first 5 sts for border; hdc blo across to last 5 sts; sc across last 5 sts; turn.
- Row 2 (WS): Repeat Row 1, keeping borders in sc through both loops and body in hdc blo.
Repeat to length: Lap 50 in (127 cm), Throw 60 in (152 cm), Oversized 70 in (178 cm). If your row height differs, measure as you go.
Edging and Finish (Crochet)
- Optional round of sc evenly around blanket with 10.0–12.0 mm hook, working 3 sc in each corner. Keep edges relaxed.
- Weave in ends securely. Block lightly as fiber allows.
Alternative Textures (Knit)
- All Garter: RS and WS knit across the body; keep 10-st seed borders. CO remains the same.
- Chunky Basketweave: Body multiple of 12 + 0; work 6 rows of [k6, p6], then 6 rows of [p6, k6]. Keep 10-st seed borders; choose a CO so body is a multiple of 12.
Adjustments
- Length: Add or subtract repeats; plan 12–18 yd (11–16 m) per inch of length change for knit, 10–15 yd (9–14 m) for crochet (super bulky).
- Width: Change total CO/ch by 2 sts for knit or by 2 ch for crochet to keep symmetry.
- Loft vs. drape: Go up to US 17 (12.0 mm) or US P/Q (15.0 mm) for airier fabric; down to US 13 (9.0 mm, UK Old 00) or US M/N (9.0 mm) for denser fabric.
Troubleshooting
- Wavy edges: Your borders may be looser; tighten tension on border sts or drop 1–2 needle/hook sizes for borders only.
- Too narrow/wide: Measure after 6–8 in (15–20 cm); adjust by adding/removing body sts in multiples of 2 (knit) or chains in multiples of 2 (crochet).
- Rowing out (knit): Use a needle one size smaller for purl rows or try wooden needles to stabilize tension.
Care
Wool/wool blends: Hand wash cool, lay flat. Superwash: Machine gentle cool in a bag, lay flat. Acrylic/cotton: Machine gentle cool, lay flat to prevent stretching. Always follow yarn label.
Tools and Sizes Quick Reference
- US 13 (9.0 mm) ≈ UK Old 00
- US 15 (10.0 mm) ≈ UK Old 000
- US 17 (12.0 mm) ≈ UK Old n/a
- Crochet: US N/P-15 (10.0 mm), US P/Q (15.0 mm)
Yarn Planning Example (Throw Size)
Target 900–1,050 yd (823–960 m). If using 100 g balls ≈ 55 yd/50 m, you will need about 17–20 balls (1,700–2,000 g). If using 200 g skeins ≈ 109 yd/100 m, plan 9–10 skeins.
