Classic Beanie Pattern (Knit & Crochet)
Two versatile, detailed patterns: one knitted in the round and one crocheted. Includes sizes from newborn to adult large, folded-brim and slouchy options, yarn/needle/hook conversion tables, shaping notes and finishing tips. Test your gauge before starting.
Yarn & Yardage
- Main yarn: worsted weight(American "4"/Aran option). Imperial: 150–250 yards (140–230 m) for adult sizes; see per-size yardage below. Metric: gauge and yardage indicated in metres and grams where helpful.
- Alternative: aran/heavy worsted for a denser hat. Imperial: 130–220 yards (120–200 m).
- Optional: contrasting yarn for brim or pompom: 20–50 yards (20–40 m).
Yardage by size (approximate)
- Newborn: 75–100 yd (70–90 m)
- Baby (6–12 mo): 100–125 yd (90–100 m)
- Child (4–6): 125–140 yd (110–125 m)
- Teen/Adult Small: 150–175 yd (137–160 m)
- Adult Large/Slouchy: 200–250 yd (183–230 m)
Needles & Hooks (US, UK Old, Metric)
Knitting needles (recommended; choose based on desired fabric):
- Smaller (brim/denser rib): US 7 – UK 7 – 4.5 mm
- Main (standard worsted): US 8 – UK 6 – 5.0 mm
- Looser/slouchy (optional): US 9 – UK 5 – 5.5 mm
Circular needles & DPNs: 16" (40 cm) circular for small to adult, or use 24" (60 cm) for very slouchy sizes; set of DPNs same size for crown decreases if preferred.
Crochet hooks (recommended):
- For dense fabric: US G/6 – UK 4 – 4.0 mm
- Main worsted texture: US H/8 – UK 6 – 5.0 mm
- Looser/slouchy: US I/9 – UK 5 – 5.5 mm
Gauge
Knitting (stockinette in the round): 18 sts × 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) on US 8 (5.0 mm). Adjust needles to meet gauge.
Crochet (hdc or sc depending): 14 hdc = 4" (10 cm) on 5.0 mm hook (adjust hook for your tension).

Knitted Beanie Pattern (Round, Folded Brim) - Adult Medium Example
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn, 150–175 yd (137–160 m)
- 16" circular needle US 8 (5.0 mm) and set of DPNs same size OR 24" circular for magic loop
- Stitch marker, tapestry needle, stitch holder (optional), pompom (optional)
Instructions
- CO 88 sts loosely (long-tail) using US 8 or CO 96 for looser fit. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. PM to mark beginning of rnd.
- Brim: Work K2, P2 rib for 1.75–2” (4.5–5 cm) for standard brim. For folded brim: work rib for 3.5–4” (9–10 cm) then fold up and graft or stitch down to inside.
- Body: Switch to stockinette (knit every rnd) and knit until hat measures 6–6.5" (15–16.5 cm) from cast-on edge (measured before folding if you made a long brim).
- Crown shaping (for 88 sts):
- Rnd 1: *K10, k2tog; rep from * to end (80 sts)
- Rnd 2: Knit
- Rnd 3: *K9, k2tog; rep to end (72 sts)
- Rnd 4: Knit
- Rnd 5: *K8, k2tog; rep to end (64 sts)
- Continue decrease rounds every other round, decreasing one stitch between decreases each decrease round until you have 8–12 sts left (common sequence: k7,k2tog; k6,k2tog; etc.).
- Finish: When 8–12 sts remain, cut yarn leaving an 8" tail, thread tail through tapestry needle and draw tail through remaining stitches, pull tight to close. Weave in ends and block gently. Add pompom if desired.
Notes & Fit Adjustments
- To make slouchy: add 1.5–2" (4–5 cm) extra length before starting crown decreases and use US 9 (5.5 mm) for a looser fabric.
- If gauge differs, calculate CO to head circumference: (desired circumference x gauge sts per inch) rounded to a multiple of decrease repeat (for above decrease, multiple of 11 for 88 example).
Knitted Beanie (Flat/Seamed Option)
CO an even number of sts, work rib, then stockinette in rows to desired height, perform crown decreases across rows as mirror decreases, bind off and seam top using mattress stitch. Seam side seam to inside; optionally graft top closed for neater finish.
Crocheted Beanie Pattern (Adult Medium, Hdc Version)
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn, 150–175 yd (137–160 m)
- 5.0 mm crochet hook (US H/8) or size to obtain gauge
- Stitch marker, tapestry needle, pompom optional
Instructions (Top-Down, Worked in Rounds, No Seams)
- Start: Magic ring.
- Rnd 1: 10 hdc in magic ring, tighten ring (10)
- Rnd 2: *Inc in next st; rep around* (20)
- Rnd 3: *Hdc in next st, inc in next st; rep around* (30)
- Rnd 4: *Hdc in next 2 sts, inc in next st; rep around* (40)
- Rnd 5: *Hdc in next 3 sts, inc in next st; rep around* (50)
- Continue increasing in this pattern until crown diameter measures about 6–7" (15–17 cm) for adult medium; typical final round before body is 80–90 sts depending on tension. Mark start of round with a stitch marker for spiral control.
- Body: Hdc in each st around until hat measures 6–6.5" (15–16.5 cm) from top (or desired length).
- Brim: For folded brim, work additional 1.5–2" of hdc then fold and stitch down, or work ribbing: 2 rounds of BLO hdc to create a stretchy folded brim feel, then fold up.
- Finish: Fasten off, weave in ends, add pompom if desired.
Alternative Stitching & Texture
- Use sc for a denser fabric and slightly smaller finished size (sc gauge smaller).
- Use front post and back post double crochet (FPDC/BPDC) to create a deep ribbed brim that does not require folding.
Finishing Tips
- Weave in ends on inside; for a cleaner interior fold brim edges and mattress-stitch them into place before weaving ends.
- Block lightly to even stitches: steam-block for knit, spray-block for crochet. Avoid overstretching elasticity of ribbed brim when blocking.
- Pompom: make pompom 2–3" (5–7.5 cm) for baby, 3–4" (7.5–10 cm) for adult. Attach securely with a double knot and weave tail into inside of hat—for washable hats, re-enforce with a small button inside if desired.
Pattern Variations & Ideas
- Colorwork: add stripes every 6–8 rounds or use fair isle for yoke patterns. Keep floats short.
- Lacy slouch: on the body, substitute a simple lace repeat (eg. K2, yo, ssk) on knit version for lightweight hats.
- Earflaps: pick up stitches along lower edge and crochet or knit short triangular earflaps, add braids or ties.
Troubleshooting
- If the hat is too tight: go up a needle/hook size or add 4–6 sts in CO for knitting or add rounds to crown for crochet.
- If the hat is too loose: go down a needle/hook size or subtract a few sts in CO; check gauge and re-calc using your stitch-per-inch measurement.
