When mitten measures desired length, begin decreases:
Rnd 1: *K2tog, work in pattern to 2 stitches before marker, SSK, slip marker; repeat from * to end
Rnd 2: Knit
Repeat these 2 rounds until 20 stitches remain.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread tail through remaining stitches, pulling tight to close.
Thumb:
Transfer thumb gusset stitches back onto needles. Pick up and knit 2 stitches over gap.
Work in stockinette stitch until thumb measures 2 inches.
Decrease Rnd: *K2tog; repeat from * to end
Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, and pull tight to close.
Weave in ends and block mittens to shape.
