Switch to US 8 (5mm) needles. Begin cable pattern: Row 1: *P2, C4B, P2, K2, P2; repeat from * to end of round. Row 2 and all even rows: Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as they appear. Row 3: *P2, K2, P2, C4F, P2; repeat from * to end of round. Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Continue knitting in the cable pattern until the hat measures 7.5 inches (19cm) from the cast-on edge.
Crown decreases: Round 1: *K6, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. Rounds 2, 4, and 6: Knit. Round 3: *K5, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. Round 5: *K4, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. Round 7: *K3, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. Round 8: *K2, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. Round 9: *K1, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round. Round 10: K2tog around.
