Cast on: Using the long-tail cast on method, cast on 88 stitches.

Ribbing: Work in a K2, P2 ribbing pattern for 1.5 inches (4 cm).

Body: Begin working the cable pattern as follows:

Round 2: *K2, P2, K4; repeat from * to end of round.

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2: Continue repeating Rounds 1 and 2 until the hat measures approximately 6.5 inches (16 cm) from the cast-on edge, or desired length.

Decrease rounds:

Round 1: *K2, P2, K2tog, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 2: *K1, P2, K2, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 3: *K1, P2, K1, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 4: *K1, P2, K2tog, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 5: *K1, P2, K1, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 6: *K1, P2tog, K1, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 7: *K1, P1, K1, P2; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 8: *K1, P1, K1, P1; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 9: *K1, P2tog, K1; repeat from * to end of round.

Round 10: *K1, P1, K1; repeat from * to end of round.

Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through a yarn needle and slide the needle through the remaining stitches on the needles. Pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in all loose ends.

Note: The cable pattern creates a hat that stretches to fit most adults. If you prefer a looser fit, you can increase the cast-on stitches by multiples of 4.
