Cozy Ribbed Beanie (Knitted, worked in the round)
A classic, squishy worsted-weight beanie with a deep 1x1 rib brim and simple crown decreases. Worked in the round—choose a snug brim or larger needles for a slouchy look. Sizes included: Baby, Child, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Large. Gauge and needle options are listed so you can easily adjust fit.
Materials
- Yarn: Worsted/Aran (Weight 4). Typical skein: 100 g (3.5 oz) / approx 200 yd (183 m). Suggested yardage by size: Baby: 80 yd (73 m); Child: 120 yd (110 m); Teen/Adult Small: 180 yd (165 m); Adult Large: 220 yd (201 m).
- Needles (knitting - circular and/or DPNs or magic loop): Main: US 7 / UK 7 / 4.5 mm (16"/40 cm circular + set of double-pointed needles or long circular for magic loop). Brim (optional, for firmer rib): US 6 / UK 8 / 4.0 mm. For a slouchy beanie, use US 9 / UK 5 / 5.5 mm. (All sizes listed as US, UK (old), Metric.)
- Notions: stitch marker, tapestry needle, scrap yarn for provisional cast-on or marker, small amount of stuffing for optional pompom, scissors.
Gauge
18 stitches and 24 rounds = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette (knit every round) using US 7 / 4.5 mm needles. Adjust needle size to match gauge.
Abbreviations
- K = knit
- P = purl
- St(s) = stitch(es); rnd = round; CO = cast on; BO = bind off; pm = place marker.
Sizes & Finished Measurements
- Baby (Newborn–3 mo): Circumference 14" / 36 cm; Depth 6.5" / 16.5 cm; CO 64 sts.
- Child (2–10 yrs): Circumference 18" / 46 cm; Depth 7.5" / 19 cm; CO 80 sts.
- Teen/Adult Small: Circumference 21" / 53 cm; Depth 9" / 23 cm; CO 96 sts.
- Adult Large: Circumference 23" / 58 cm; Depth 9.5" / 24 cm; CO 104 sts.
Notes on Fit
Cast-on counts above are calculated from the shown gauge and rounded to multiples of 2 to accommodate 1x1 rib. If you tend to knit tightly, go up one needle size for the body. To make a brim you can fold the rib up or leave it unfolded.
Pattern
Cast On & Brim
- Using US 6 (4.0 mm) for a firmer brim or US 7 (4.5 mm) if you prefer not to switch, CO the number of stitches for your size and join to work in the round being careful not to twist.
- Baby: CO 64 sts
- Child: CO 80 sts
- Teen/Adult Small: CO 96 sts
- Adult Large: CO 104 sts
- Place marker for beginning of round.
- Work 1x1 rib (K1, P1) for 1.5"–2" (approx 9–12 rounds at our gauge) or desired brim depth. For a folded brim, work 2"–2.5" so you have extra to fold up.
Body
- Switch to the main needle if you used a smaller one for the brim (US 7 / 4.5 mm recommended). Knit every round (stockinette in the round) until hat measures from cast-on edge: Baby 6.5" / 16.5 cm total depth (including brim), Child 7.5" / 19 cm, Teen/Adult S 9" / 23 cm, Adult L 9.5" / 24 cm. Subtract brim height from these totals to know how many inches to work after brim.
Crown Decreases (worked the same way for every size; rounds reduce gradually)
The decreases below assume an even-numbered stitch count and are worked with a pair of decrease rounds separated by a plain knit round to keep shaping smooth. Continue the decrease sequence until 8–12 sts remain, then finish by closing the top.
- Decrease sequence: Repeat the following pair of rounds, adjusting the number of knit stitches between decreases as necessary—on the first decrease round you will space the k2tog evenly across the round; on the next round knit across; then decrease again spacing k2tog with one fewer knit between decreases.
- Rnd A: *K X, K2tog* repeat to end of round (where X = current spacing; see examples below)
- Rnd B: Knit all stitches
- Rnd C: *K (X-1), K2tog* repeat to end
- Rnd D: Knit all stitches
- Example (Adult Small, CO 96):
- Rnd A: *K8, K2tog* repeat (96 -> 86 sts)
- Rnd B: Knit
- Rnd C: *K7, K2tog* repeat (86 -> 78 sts)
- Rnd D: Knit
- Rnd E: *K6, K2tog* repeat ... and so on.
- Continue decreasing in this manner until about 16 sts remain (or sooner if you prefer fewer final stitches). When you reach a small number that comfortably fits on double-pointed needles (approx 8–16 sts), transfer to DPNs if needed and begin decreasing every round as follows: *K1, K2tog* around until 8 sts remain. Break yarn leaving a 6" tail, thread tail through tapestry needle and pull through remaining stitches to close. Weave in tail on the inside and secure.
Finishing
- Weave in all ends. If you folded the brim, press gently or steam-block from the inside to set the fold (do not over-steam).
- Optional pompom: Make a pompom with remaining yarn or a coordinating color. Attach securely through both layers of the brim if folded; fasten with several knots and weave yarn tails into the inside of the hat.
- Block gently if desired for a neater stitch appearance.
Adjustments & Tips
- Want a slouchy beanie? Use US 9 (5.5 mm) needles for the body and increase total length by 1.5–2" before starting crown decreases.
- Want a bulkier brim? Work 2x2 rib (K2,P2) or use a smaller needle for a firmer elastic brim.
- To change stitch pattern: replace the stockinette body with any round-compatible pattern (e.g., seed stitch, cables). Ensure stitch multiples and gauge adjustments are considered.
Troubleshooting
- If your hat comes out too small: check your gauge, go up a needle size, or increase CO by 4–8 sts (keeping a multiple of 2).
- If the crown puckers oddly: make sure decreases are evenly spaced (use stitch markers to divide the round into equal sections).
