Notes on Fit

Cast-on counts above are calculated from the shown gauge and rounded to multiples of 2 to accommodate 1x1 rib. If you tend to knit tightly, go up one needle size for the body. To make a brim you can fold the rib up or leave it unfolded.

Pattern

Cast On & Brim

  1. Using US 6 (4.0 mm) for a firmer brim or US 7 (4.5 mm) if you prefer not to switch, CO the number of stitches for your size and join to work in the round being careful not to twist.
    • Baby: CO 64 sts
    • Child: CO 80 sts
    • Teen/Adult Small: CO 96 sts
    • Adult Large: CO 104 sts
  2. Place marker for beginning of round.
  3. Work 1x1 rib (K1, P1) for 1.5"–2" (approx 9–12 rounds at our gauge) or desired brim depth. For a folded brim, work 2"–2.5" so you have extra to fold up.

Body

  1. Switch to the main needle if you used a smaller one for the brim (US 7 / 4.5 mm recommended). Knit every round (stockinette in the round) until hat measures from cast-on edge: Baby 6.5" / 16.5 cm total depth (including brim), Child 7.5" / 19 cm, Teen/Adult S 9" / 23 cm, Adult L 9.5" / 24 cm. Subtract brim height from these totals to know how many inches to work after brim.

Crown Decreases (worked the same way for every size; rounds reduce gradually)

The decreases below assume an even-numbered stitch count and are worked with a pair of decrease rounds separated by a plain knit round to keep shaping smooth. Continue the decrease sequence until 8–12 sts remain, then finish by closing the top.

  1. Decrease sequence: Repeat the following pair of rounds, adjusting the number of knit stitches between decreases as necessary—on the first decrease round you will space the k2tog evenly across the round; on the next round knit across; then decrease again spacing k2tog with one fewer knit between decreases.
    • Rnd A: *K X, K2tog* repeat to end of round (where X = current spacing; see examples below)
    • Rnd B: Knit all stitches
    • Rnd C: *K (X-1), K2tog* repeat to end
    • Rnd D: Knit all stitches
  2. Example (Adult Small, CO 96):
    • Rnd A: *K8, K2tog* repeat (96 -> 86 sts)
    • Rnd B: Knit
    • Rnd C: *K7, K2tog* repeat (86 -> 78 sts)
    • Rnd D: Knit
    • Rnd E: *K6, K2tog* repeat ... and so on.
  3. Continue decreasing in this manner until about 16 sts remain (or sooner if you prefer fewer final stitches). When you reach a small number that comfortably fits on double-pointed needles (approx 8–16 sts), transfer to DPNs if needed and begin decreasing every round as follows: *K1, K2tog* around until 8 sts remain. Break yarn leaving a 6" tail, thread tail through tapestry needle and pull through remaining stitches to close. Weave in tail on the inside and secure.
