Legs (worked in continuous rounds)

Make 2.

Start with MC.

Round 1: Ch 12 (14, 16, 18), join with sl st to form ring being careful not to twist. Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each ch around, join with sl st = 24 (28, 32, 36) sc. Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, inc* around = 36 (42, 48, 54) sc. Rnd 4: Sc around. Continue working in sc for 6 (6.5, 7, 7.5) in / 15 (16.5, 18, 19) cm from cuff, or until desired ankle length. (If you want ribbed cuffs, work 6 rnds BLO sc before increasing round.) Fasten off but leave long tail for joining. Repeat for second leg.

Join Legs & Gusset

With RS facing, align legs so toes point away. Join MC in first stitch of leg A with sl st and work across leg A, then continue across front chain space and into leg B to form crotch. Alternatively place legs side-by-side and join across inner leg stitches to make a rectangle; pick up stitches across back and front to create gusset. Suggested method below for consistent stitch counts:

Round 1 (joining): With leg A on left and leg B on right, join MC to outermost st of leg A and sc evenly across the back of leg A up to where legs meet, sc 6 (6, 8, 8) sts along inner front of leg A, sc 6 (6, 8, 8) across inner front of leg B, then sc evenly across back of leg B to complete round. After joining you should have approx 56 (64, 72, 80) sc. Place marker at beginning of round.

Rounds 2-6 (body increase & shaping): Sc around for 4 (6, 8, 8) rounds, placing increases evenly on back panel if needed to reach chest circumference. Work until body measures 6 (7, 8, 9) in / 15 (18, 20, 23) cm from crotch (measure along back).

Body to Armholes

Continue in sc in the round until body measures 9 (10.5, 12, 13.5) in / 23 (27, 30.5, 34) cm from crotch (this leaves 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5) in for yoke & hood). At this point place markers for armholes: mark the next 10 (12, 14, 16) sts on each side as sleeve openings (these counts include seam allowances). You will now work front and back shaping.

Split For Chest Opening And Snap Band

Option A — Front overlap with snaps (recommended): Work back and front flat to create an overlap for snaps.

Row 1: Working in rows across back only: Sc across back stitches to first marker, ch 1, turn, work sc rows back and forth for 1.5 (1.75, 2, 2.25) in / 4 (4.5, 5, 5.5) cm to form shoulder height, fasten off and repeat for other shoulder. Join front with overlap: pick up and work sc from center front down one side to crotch, then across crotch to center front of other side, leave overlap edge of 1.25 in / 3 cm for snap placement. For precise snap spacing: place snaps at 0.75 in / 2 cm intervals starting 0.5 in / 1.25 cm from crotch.

Option B — Full round body with zipper: continue in round and add zipper post-blocking.

Sleeves (make 2)

Pick up 10 (12, 14, 16) sts around each armhole opening (or sew sleeves in). Join in round and work in sc for 1.5 (2, 2.5, 3) in / 4 (5, 6.5, 7.5) cm. Decrease for taper: Rnd 1: *(Sc in next 2 sts, dec)* repeat around until sleeve top measure equals desired wrist width. Continue in sc for cuff length 1.5 in / 4 cm. Optional: work 6 rnds BLO sc for a ribbed cuff. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hood

With MC, pick up and join at center back neck. Work evenly in rows to shape hood.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc across 2 (2, 3, 3) in / 5 (5, 7.5, 7.5) cm length to create base. Continue working in rows, increasing 1 st at each side every 4th row until you have 30 (34, 38, 42) sts across. Continue straight until hood measures 6.5 (7.5, 8.5, 9.5) in / 16.5 (19, 21.5, 24) cm from neck for a relaxed fit (shorten for snug fit). Shape crown: Decrease 1 st on each side every other row until 6 sts remain; finish by closing with sl sts and weaving tail through remaining sts, pull tight and secure.

Monkey Face Appliqué (make 1)

With CC (lighter tan) for muzzle:

Rnd 1: Magic ring, 6 sc in ring. Rnd 2: *Inc* around = 12 sc. Rnd 3: *Sc, inc* around = 18 sc. Rnd 4: Sc around for 2 rnds for slightly raised muzzle. Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing. Position on hood front center and sew with whipstitch. Embroider nose and mouth with black embroidery thread. Eyes: use embroidery or securely attach small embroidered safety-eye style with yarn (recommended for under 12 months).

Ears (make 2)

With MC:

Rnd 1: Magic ring, 6 sc in ring. Rnd 2: *Inc* around = 12 sc. Rnd 3: *Sc, inc* around = 18 sc. Rnd 4: Sc around (or sc in BLO for a cupped ear). Optionally make inner ear with CC: work one round smaller circle and sew inside. Lightly stuff with fiberfill and stitch to sides of hood at appropriate height.

Tail

With MC, ch 30 (36, 42, 48) or desired tail length. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Continue working in sc along tail for 10 (12, 14, 16) rows, decreasing slightly at the tip to a point. Lightly stuff and sew to center back just above seat seam.
