Materials Needed

Gauge

16 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch using US size 9 (5.5mm) needles.

Size

One size fits most adults.

Instructions

Cast on 100 stitches using the US size 8 (5mm) circular needle.

Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all stitches.

Row 2 (Wrong Side): Purl all stitches.

Continue working in stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side) until the cowl measures approximately 5 inches (12.5cm) from the cast-on edge, ending with a wrong side row.

Switch to the US size 9 (5.5mm) circular needle.

Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all stitches.

Row 2 (Wrong Side): Purl all stitches.

Continue working in stockinette stitch using the larger needle for approximately 2 inches (5cm).

Tentacles

Using the smaller needle and following the instructions below, knit 8 tentacles around the bottom edge of the cowl:

  1. With the smaller needle, pick up and knit 4 stitches from the edge of the cowl.
  2. Use the backward loop method to cast on 6 stitches. This will be the tentacle.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 seven more times to complete all 8 tentacles.

Finishing

Weave in any loose ends and block the cowl to your desired measurements.
