Everyday Beanie — Knitted Hat Pattern
A simple, squishy, everyday beanie worked in the round. Three adult-friendly sizes with a stretchy rib brim and classic crown shaping. Written for worsted/#4 yarn; easy to adjust for fit.
Designer notes
Choose a soft worsted yarn for comfortable everyday wear. The pattern includes an option for a folded rib brim for extra warmth. Gauge and choice of needles control final fit — always make a swatch.
Materials
- Yarn: Worsted weight (Category 4). Suggested yardage by size:
- Small (S): 120 yd (110 m)
- Medium (M): 150 yd (137 m)
- Large (L): 180 yd (165 m)
(Use a smooth, plied yarn for the clearest stitch definition.)
- Needles:
- 16" (40 cm) circular: US 8 / UK 6 / 5.0 mm
- Set of double-pointed needles or 12" (30 cm) short circular for decreases: US 8 / UK 6 / 5.0 mm

(US, UK Old and Metric needle sizes are provided above.)
- Notions: 1 removable marker, tapestry needle, scissors, optional pompom
Gauge
20 sts and 28 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette (knit in the round) on US 8 / 5.0 mm. Adjust needle size if necessary to meet gauge.

Sizes & cast-on
Written for three standard adult sizes. Choose the size that most closely matches head circumference.
- Small (S): CO 96 sts
- Medium (M): CO 104 sts
- Large (L): CO 112 sts
Notes: Cast-on numbers are chosen to work evenly with the decrease sequence below. If you must change cast-on, aim for a multiple of 8 for the decrease scheme to stay neat.
Brim (choose one)
1. Folded rib brim (recommended)
- Using smaller needles (optional) CO specified sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker for beginning of round.
- Work 1x1 rib (k1, p1) in the round for 2.5” / 6.5 cm (or desired brim depth).
- Change to larger needles if you used them. Next rnd: knit all sts to create neat join for body. Continue to Body section.
2. Rolled brim
- CO, join to work in the round. Knit every rnd (stockinette in the round) until brim measures 1.5” / 4 cm; the fabric will roll naturally.
Body
- After brim, knit in the round (stockinette) until piece measures:
- S: 5.5” / 14 cm from cast-on edge (measured before crown shaping)
- M: 6.5” / 16.5 cm
- L: 7” / 18 cm
- Place marker at first stitch of round if not already placed.
Crown shaping (worked the same for all sizes)
The crown is shaped by a series of decrease rounds that reduce the stitch count gradually. The pattern below spaces decreases evenly and gives a clean, round crown. Work the sequence of decrease rounds, working a plain knit round between each decrease round to keep decreases neat.
- Round 1 (Decrease round A): *K7, k2tog* repeat to end of rnd. (You are decreasing 1 stitch every 8 stitches.)
- Round 2: Knit all sts.
- Round 3 (Decrease round B): *K6, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 4: Knit all sts.
- Round 5: *K5, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 6: Knit all sts.
- Round 7: *K4, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 8: Knit all sts.
- Round 9: *K3, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 10: Knit all sts.
- Round 11: *K2, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 12: Knit all sts.
- Round 13: *K1, k2tog* repeat to end.
- Round 14: Knit all sts.
- Round 15: *K2tog* repeat to end; break yarn leaving a 6” / 15 cm tail.
After Round 15 you should have approximately 8-12 sts remaining. If your stitch count differs slightly, continue decreasing every round (k2tog) until 8-12 sts remain.
Finishing
- Switch to double-pointed needles if necessary. Cut yarn leaving a 6” / 15 cm tail.
- Thread tail through tapestry needle and pass through remaining sts, pull tight to close the crown. Secure with a knot on the wrong side and weave in ends neatly.
- For a flat top: use the tail to sew a small gather stitches and secure inside the hat. For a neater finish you may use Kitchener stitch to graft the final sts if you have them on two needles.
- Block lightly if desired: steam or wet-block to relax stitches and even the crown. Reshape and let dry.
- Add pompom if desired and weave in remaining ends.
Adjustments & fit notes
- To make the hat deeper, add 1/2” / 1.5 cm of stockinette before beginning crown shaping for each 1/2” of added depth.
- If your gauge is tighter (more sts per 4”), choose a larger needle and/or reduce cast-on by 8 sts for a closer fit. If your gauge is looser, choose a smaller needle or increase cast-on by 8 sts.
- For a slouchy look, add 1”–2” / 2.5–5 cm to the body length before decreases.
Notes on decreases
The decrease sequence spaces decreases so the crown forms gradually and evenly. If your stitch count after any round is not divisible by the repeat amount, work the repeat as evenly as possible across the round; most knitters will end up slightly shifting the repeats by one stitch to keep the decreases distributed evenly.
Care
Care depends on yarn fiber. For superwash worsted you can machine wash gentle/cold and dry flat. For non-superwash, hand-wash and dry flat to maintain shape.
