Get Those Knitting Needles Going - Two-Colour 28-st Pattern
A compact, two-colour flat knitting pattern worked over 28 sts and 25 rows. Ideal for a small panel, sample swatch, coaster or practice colour-handling. You will work the exact row sequence provided; rows are written left-to-right for flat knitting (RS and WS indicated).
Materials
- Yarn A (main colour): approx 50 g (approx 100 yd / 91 m)
- Yarn B (contrast): approx 25 g (approx 50 yd / 46 m)
- Needles: 1 pair straight or small circular needles, size US 8 / UK (old) 6 / 5.0 mm
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors, stitch marker (optional)
Notes: yarn amounts are small because the piece is only 28 sts wide and 25 rows long. Adjust amounts if you plan to repeat the pattern or turn it into a larger fabric.
Yarn & Needle Sizes (clear listing)
- Suggested yarn weight: worsted / aran (medium). You may substitute DK or fingering but needle and gauge will change.
- Needle size: US 8 / UK (old) 6 / 5.0 mm
Gauge (tension)
Not critical for this small panel. As a reference, with US 8 / 5.0 mm and worsted yarn expect ~18 sts x 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette. If you need a precise finished size, work a gauge swatch and adjust needle size.
Finished size (approx)
28 sts wide = approx 6" (15 cm) across; 25 rows = approx 3.5" (9 cm) tall, depending on yarn and tension.
Abbreviations
- CO = Cast on
- BO = Bind off / cast off
- K = Knit
- P = Purl
- RS = Right side (knit row for stockinette)
- WS = Wrong side (purl row for stockinette)
- st(s) = stitch(es)
General Notes and Colour Handling Tips
- This is worked flat, turning after each row.
- When changing colours, always twist yarns on the back of the work to avoid holes: bring the new colour under the old colour and pick up to start next stitch.
- Try not to carry colour B across more than 4-5 stitches without catching it; if a float would be longer, twist the yarns every 2-3 sts to anchor the float or catch the unused yarn behind the work.
- Keep consistent tension when carrying yarns so the fabric lies flat.
- Work stranded short rows carefully: because colours change frequently, weave in short yarn tails as you go or plan to weave in many small ends at the end.

Finishing
- Weave in ends on the WS using a tapestry needle. Because this pattern uses many short colour repeats, take care to trim and tidy ends close to the fabric without cutting floats you need to keep.
- Lightly block the panel to even stitches: soak in lukewarm water, gently squeeze out excess, shape to final measurements, pin if desired, and dry flat.
Troubleshooting & Tips
- If edges pull, check your selvedge stitches tension: slip first stitch purlwise at the start of RS rows and knit the last stitch, or work a garter selvedge (K or P) for a firmer edge.
- For a neater colour change, twist yarns on the WS each time you change colour to eliminate holes.
- To convert to circular knitting (working in the round), you would need to adapt the row instructions to continuous rounds and watch how floats are carried; this pattern is written for flat knitting only.
Variations
- Repeat the 25-row sequence to create a longer strip or blanket panel.
- Swap weights and needles for a different drape—remember to check gauge and adjust cast-on accordingly if you scale up.
