Gold Gleam Shawl

Gold Gleam is a simple yet elegant triangular shawl inspired by molten gold. It uses a garter border and a centered leaf lace motif to catch the light of metallic yarn. Designed for DK weight metallic yarn but adaptable to fingering weight by adjusting the gauge and number of lace repeats.

Materials

Yarn DK weight metallic gold, about 440 yards total (402 m). Imperial: ~2 balls of 100 g each; Metric: ~400 m total. If using fingering weight, you will need about 900-1000 yards total (820-914 m).
Needles US 6 4.0 mm and US 7 4.5 mm; UK Old 8 and 9; Metric 4.0 and 4.5 mm. Use the smaller size for a firmer fabric when using DK weight; the larger for a drapier result.
Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in garter stitch on the suggested needle sizes.
Finished size: approximately 60 inches (152 cm) long and 9 inches (23 cm) wide after blocking.

Important notes

Cast on 48 stitches to allow two 4-stitch garter borders and a 40-stitch center panel for the lace motif.
The central lace panel uses a simple leaf motif within a 12-row repeat. Repeat Rows 7-12 to lengthen the scarf. End with a garter border on Rows 1-6.

Pattern

Cast on 48 stitches with a long tail cast on. Rows 1-6 form the garter border: knit every stitch on each row.

Center lace panel: the central 40 stitches form the leaf lace motif. Work the following rows for a 12-row lace repeat. Repeat Rows 7-12 until scarf length from border to border measures about 60 inches, then finish with a 6-row garter border.

Row 7 RS: Knit 4, (yo, k2, k1, k2, yo) across the central 40 stitches, knit 4.

Row 8 WS: Purl all across.

Row 9 RS: Knit 4, (k2, yo, k1, k2tog, k2, yo, k2) across the central 40 stitches, knit 4.

Row 10 WS: Purl all across.

Row 11 RS: Knit 4, (k2, yo, k2, k2tog, k2, yo, k2, k1) across the central 40 stitches, knit 4.

Row 12 WS: Purl all across.

Repeat Rows 7-12 until length reached. Bind off loosely. Block gently to measurements.

Finishing

Weave in ends. For extra shimmer, steam with a pressing cloth and no direct heat.
