Friendly, slightly stoic sculpted dog inspired by Gromit. Worked in continuous rounds (amigurumi style) with simple shaping for clean lines. Finished toy is approximately 11" (28 cm) tall sitting; 14" (36 cm) standing, depending on yarn and tension.
Approximately 20 sc x 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) using 3.5 mm hook. For amigurumi you want a tight fabric so stuffing doesn't show. Adjust hook size if necessary.
With main color. R1: MR, 6 sc (6) R2: inc around (12) R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18) R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24) R5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30) R6: (4 sc, inc) x6 (36) R7-12: sc around (36) [6 rounds] R13: (4 sc, dec) x6 (30) R14: (3 sc, dec) x6 (24) Insert safety eyes between R9-R10, spaced about 8-10 sts apart depending on your tension. If embroidering eyes, embroider later. R15: (2 sc, dec) x6 (18) R16: (sc, dec) x6 (12) Start stuffing head firmly. R17: dec around until closed. FO and weave end in. Leave long tail for attaching to body.
With contrast (white). R1: MR, 6 sc (6) R2: inc around (12) R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18) R4-6: sc around (18) [3 rounds] R7: (sc, dec) x6 (12) Fold slightly and stuff very lightly to form a rounded muzzle. Leave tail for sewing. Attach to lower front of head covering rounds 13-15 area. Sew seam invisibly around base so muzzle sits proud but secure.
With dark brown. R1: MR, 6 sc (6) R2: (sc, inc) x3 (9) R3: sc around (9) FO leaving tail. Lightly stuff and sew to muzzle tip. Embroider nostrils with black thread: two small satin stitch dots.
With main color. Row 1: ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (9) Row 2: ch1, turn, sc across (9) Row 3: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc x5, sc2tog (7) Row 4: ch1, turn, sc across (7) Row 5: ch1, turn, sc2tog, sc x3, sc2tog (5) Row 6: ch1, turn, sc across (5) FO leaving long tail. Shape ear by folding the base slightly and sewing to head between rows 6-10, angled back slightly. Add small inner ear patch in darker brown if desired.
To make head poseable, insert a short piece of thin craft wire into the bottom of the head before attaching to body. Wrap wire end in yarn or tape to avoid leakage and poke into body and anchor with a few tight stitches.
With main color. R1: MR, 6 sc (6) R2: inc around (12) R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18) R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24) R5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30) R6-14: sc around (30) [9 rounds] — build torso length R15: (3 sc, dec) x6 (24) R16: (2 sc, dec) x6 (18) Start stuffing body firmly. Keep bottom open for feet placement. R17: sc around (18) R18: (sc, dec) x6 (12) R19: dec around until closed. FO and weave end in. Leave long tail for sewing to head with yarn needle or join directly if you crocheted head to body.
With main color. R1: MR, 6 sc (6) R2-14: sc around (6) [13 rounds] — tube for arm length Stuff lightly. For slight shaping, increase at the shoulder: R15: inc, sc x4, inc (8) — place a short seam to join to body between R8-R10 on torso. FO leaving tail to sew. Add paw detail by switching to contrast for 1 round at end if desired.
With main color. R1: MR, 6 sc (6) R2: inc around (12) R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18) R4-9: sc around (18) [6 rounds] — foot base Change to a slightly darker yarn for sole (optional) and sc around 1 round. R10-18: sc around (18) [9 rounds] — lower leg Stuff firmly. Flatten top and sew the opening with invisible stitches to body base, shaping leg angle so Gromit can sit/stand. Sew legs spaced ~10 sts apart on body base. Reinforce with extra stitches if toy will be handled frequently.
With main color. Ch 8, start in 2nd ch from hook sc across (7), work 12 rounds in spiral sc to make a tapered tube, stuffing lightly. FO and sew to back of body lower part.
Use brown or black embroidery floss. Embroider eyebrows as two slightly arched satin stitches above eyes. For eyelids, use a couple of sc chains across top of eye area in contrast color or work short rows across the eye vertical to make a sleepy gaze. Mouth can be embroidered with a simple curved line under muzzle; optional stitch for cheek creases.
Spot clean with damp cloth and mild soap. Hand wash gently in cool water if necessary; reshape and dry flat. Avoid tumble dry.
