Japanese Style Hat Knitting Pattern

Materials:

• Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (UK: Aran, Metric: 10 ply) in your color choice
• Needles: US 7 (UK 7, Metric 4.5mm) and US 8 (UK 6, Metric 5mm) double-pointed needles
• Tapestry needle
• Stitch markers

Gauge:

18 stitches x 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch with larger needles

Instructions:

1. Using smaller needles, cast on 80 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker at beginning of round.
2. Work *K2, P2* ribbing for 1.5 inches.
3. Switch to larger needles and knit in stockinette stitch until hat measures 6 inches from cast on edge.
4. Begin crown decreases as follows:
   1. K8, K2tog, repeat around.
   2. Knit all stitches.
   3. K7, K2tog, repeat around.
   4. Knit all stitches.
   5. Continue in this manner, decreasing 8 stitches every other round until 8 stitches remain.
   6. Break yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close.
5. Weave in ends and block hat to shape.
