Make a cozy blanket featuring the name 'kylie' in bold block letters. Two construction options are included: intarsia (knit the name into the blanket) or duplicate stitch (easiest: embroider the name after knitting the whole blanket in one color). This pattern gives finished dimensions, yarn and needle recommendations, stitch gauge, a simple 7x9 block-letter chart for KYLIE (shown uppercase for maximum legibility), and step-by-step instructions for baby and throw sizes.
Stockinette stitch: 18 sts x 24 rows = 4in / 10cm on recommended needles. Always swatch in the stitch pattern and adjust needle size to match gauge for your chosen finished size.
Each uppercase letter in the chart is 7 sts wide and 9 rows high. Letter spacing in the chart is 2 sts. Total name width in stitches for 'K Y L I E' = (5 letters x 7 sts) + (4 spaces x 2 sts) = 43 sts.
Use this formula for cast-on: (desired width in inches x sts-per-inch from your gauge) rounded to the nearest whole number, then add 12 sts for borders (6 sts garter border each side). Example stitch-per-inch from gauge: 18 sts / 4in = 4.5 sts per inch.
To center the 43-st name block: (Total sts CO - 43) / 2 = sts for left-side background before the name starts. Leave the same number after the name.
Legend: # = CC (name color), . = MC (background)

Notes about reading the chart: each row in the chart represents a knit-row on RS and a purl-row on WS. On RS rows read the chart from right to left; on WS rows read it left to right. The preformatted block above shows the five letters (K Y L I E) side-by-side. Center the whole block across the blanket width as explained in the centering step.
1) CO required number of sts (see stitch counts above). Example: baby CO 147; throw CO 228. Add a multiple to suit your swatch/gauge if you modify size.
2) Knit garter border: K 6 sts at beginning and end of every row for 12 sts total in border. Work 6 rows (3 garter ridges) in MC.
3) Setup row (RS): K 6 (border), work MC across left-side background until the first stitch of the name area (calculated as (CO - 43) / 2), then begin working the chart across the middle 43 sts using CC where the chart shows '#'. Use intarsia technique: for each separate contiguous block of CC that does not run to the edge, use a separate bobbin or small ball and when color changes occur twist the yarns together at the join to prevent holes.
4) Continue in stockinette for the body: On RS rows knit across, following the chart for the 43-st name area; on WS rows purl across, following the chart for the 43-st area (purl CC where chart has '#'). Keep border 6 sts at each edge in garter (k every row) to prevent curling. Work chart over 9 rows vertically; repeat vertical pattern only once (name appears once). If you want the name repeated vertically, add spacing rows of MC between repeats.
5) After completing the name block and reaching desired length for blanket (for baby sample work until whole blanket measures approx 36in / 91cm; for throw approx 60in / 152cm), finish with 6 rows of garter border (matching start).
6) Bind off loosely in pattern. Weave in all ends carefully, especially many small intarsia yarn ends. Block lightly to shape.
1) Knit entire blanket in MC with the same garter borders. Do not introduce CC while knitting the blanket.
2) After blocking, use CC and duplicate stitch to embroider the chart over the flat knitted fabric. Duplicate stitch is worked by following the knit stitches on the fabric and laying the CC over the V of the stitch then securing it on the back. This avoids intarsia joins and many yarn ends and is forgiving for placement adjustments.
You can replace 'KYLIE' with any name. Create your own block-letter chart using 7x9 or 5x7 pixel letters and recalculate the name width the same way: (letters x letter-width) + (spaces x spacing-width). Center as described.
Want lowercase specifically as typed 'kylie'? Use duplicate stitch to embroider lowercase letters after knitting the blanket so you can choose a handwritten or rounded font easily.
This pattern assumes a worsted/aran yarn at roughly 200yds / 100g (183m / 100g). Adjust yarn quantity if your skein yardage differs.
