Crochet Treble-Filet Blanket with Mickey Mouse Outline

Designer note: This pattern uses US crochet terms throughout. The motif is created using a treble-based filet mesh so the outline of Mickey Mouse reads as a negative/positive space on a solid treble-ground background. Full printable filet chart (30×26 squares) and a higher-resolution PDF are available from the pattern page at https://purljam.verde.uk. For help or custom sizes email team@verde.uk. Finished size

Approx 48 in x 60 in (122 cm x 152 cm) after blocking. Size will vary with yarn choice and tension; instructions include a simple resizing formula.

Materials

Gauge

Filet mesh gauge (after blocking): 10 filet squares = 4 in (10 cm) wide and 8 rows = 4 in (10 cm) high using treble-filet configuration listed below. Because filet square size depends on hook and yarn, swatch a 12-square by 12-row sample and measure. Adjust hook to match.

Abbreviations & terms

US terms used. Translation note: If you prefer UK terms see the short table below.

UK equivalence (approx): US tr = UK double treble. If you work regularly with UK terms translate abbreviations before starting.

Filet construction notes

This pattern uses a treble-based filet. One filet "square" = the horizontal space taken by 3 chains (foundation) and the vertical space of one row of trebles. Two square types:

Foundation chain formula (for motif panel width measured in squares): foundation chains = (3 x number_of_squares) + 4. The extra chains make the turning chain (ch 4) that counts as the first tr at the start of each row.

Pattern structure

Blanket = border worked in treble stitches, center panel worked in treble-filet following the Mickey Mouse chart centered on the panel.

Panel & motif

We recommend making a motif panel that is 60 squares wide by 50 rows high for a large bold Mickey silhouette, then adding a treble border to reach the finished dimensions. For a 48–60" blanket this will finish nicely; if you want a smaller motif reduce squares proportionally using the foundation chain formula above and the downloadable 30×26 chart as your working grid (you may tile or scale the small chart).

Prepare foundation chain for a 60-square wide panel

Chain (3 x 60) + 4 = 184 ch.

Row 1 (RS):

ch 4 (counts as first tr), tr in 5th ch from hook, then work across following the chart: for each open square work (tr, ch 2, sk 2), for each filled square work (tr, tr, tr) across the three-ch space. End row with tr in top of turning ch (if your turning chain counts as a tr) so the row ends squarely. Turn.

Subsequent rows (Row 2 and up):

Always ch 4 to start (counts as first tr + ch 1 spacing), then follow the chart squares from left to right for RS rows. On WS rows read chart right to left, keeping the same sequence of open and filled squares. Continue until you have worked the chart height (for our recommended large motif 50 rows). If you want a tiled repeat, repeat chart vertically or switch to symmetrical negative space after the motif as desired.

Mickey chart

The main printable Mickey outline chart (30×26 squares) is hosted on the pattern page at https://purljam.verde.uk. That chart can be centered on the 60-square panel by doubling the 30-square width to create two mirrored motif halves, or you may use one centered 30-square motif with surrounding plain mesh.

Border (worked after the filet panel is complete)

Option A: Simple treble border (3 rounds)

  1. Round 1 (RS): With RS facing, join yarn in any corner. ch 3 (counts as first tr), work 2 tr in corner space, work tr evenly along edge (working 1 tr in each tr or tr cluster across the edge and 3 tr in corner spaces), place 3 tr in each corner. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (This evens the edges.)
  2. Round 2: ch 3, tr around placing 3 tr in each corner stitch. Join. (Optional: adjust to keep border flat.)
  3. Round 3: Decorative edge: ch 1, sc around or crab stitch (reverse sc) for a neat finish.

Option B: Picot edge for a decorative finish: Round 3 replace sc with (sc, ch 3, sl st in first ch) picots every 6 trs.

Finishing

  1. Weave in ends with a tapestry needle.
  2. Block the blanket by pinning to size and lightly spraying with water or using a steam iron at a safe distance per your yarn label. Allow to dry fully.
  3. Trim any stray fibers and re-weave loose ends.

Resizing guidelines

To change finished width in squares: decide how many squares wide you want the motif panel (W). Chain (3 x W) + 4 to start. To change height, either repeat rows of plain filet mesh above/below the motif or tile the motif vertically. Keep gauge consistent to reach desired final measurements.

Notes & tips

Care instructions

Follow yarn manufacturer recommendations. For most acrylics: machine wash gentle, tumble low or lay flat to dry. For natural fibers, hand wash and dry flat.
