Instructions

NOTE: This pattern assumes basic knowledge of knitting stitches and techniques, including casting on, knitting, purling, and cabling.

  1. Using the US size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles, cast on 88 stitches.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
  3. Knit in a 2x2 ribbing pattern (alternating knit and purl stitches) for 2 inches (5cm).
  4. Cable Pattern:
    • Round 1: *K2, p2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 2: *K2, p2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 3: *K2, p2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 4: *Sl 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Repeat Rounds 1-4 until the cable pattern measures 5 inches (13cm) from the ribbing.
  5. Switch to the US size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles.
  6. Continue working in the cable pattern until the hat measures approximately 7 inches (18cm) from the ribbing, ending with Round 4 of the cable pattern.
  7. Decrease Rounds:
    • Switch to double-pointed needles when necessary as the hat becomes too small to fit around the circular needles.
    • Decrease Round 1: *K2tog, p2. Repeat from * to end of round (66 stitches).
    • Decrease Round 2: *K1, p2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Decrease Round 3: *K1, p2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Decrease Round 4: *K1, p2tog. Repeat from * to end of round (44 stitches).
    • Decrease Round 5: *K1, p1. Repeat from * to end of round.
  8. Continue working decreases in this established pattern until only 8 stitches remain.
  9. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
  10. Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle.
