- Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

- Repeat Rounds 1-4 until the cable pattern measures 5 inches (13cm) from the ribbing.
- Switch to the US size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles.
- Continue working in the cable pattern until the hat measures approximately 7 inches (18cm) from the ribbing, ending with Round 4 of the cable pattern.
- Decrease Rounds:

- Decrease Round 1: *K2tog, p2. Repeat from * to end of round (66 stitches).
- Decrease Round 2: *K1, p2. Repeat from * to end of round.

- Decrease Round 5: *K1, p1. Repeat from * to end of round.
- Continue working decreases in this established pattern until only 8 stitches remain.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
- Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle.
