Structure & Notes
This hoody is worked flat in pieces: Back, Left Front, Right Front, Sleeves, Hood (worked flat and seamed), Wings (worked flat and seamed), then assembled. Seams are mattress stitch. Edging is picked up around hood and front if desired. Pompom is attached to the hood peak with an I-cord or twisted cord.
Back
Using ribbing needle (US 5 / 3.75 mm):
- CO 64 (70, 76, 82) sts.
- Work 1 x 1 rib (K1, P1) for 1 inch / 2.5 cm.
Change to US 6 / 4.0 mm:
- Work in stockinette (RS: K, WS: P) until back measures 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7) in / 14 (15, 16.5, 18) cm from cast-on, ending on WS.
- Shape armholes: BO 3 (3, 4, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows—remaining sts 58 (64, 68, 74).
- Work even until armhole measures 4.5 (5, 5.5, 6) in / 11.5 (12.5, 14, 15) cm from cast-off edge for shoulders, ending on WS.
- Shoulder shaping: BO 6 (7, 7, 8) sts at beginning of next 4 rows, then BO remaining center sts for neck (if any) or leave for seaming. For small sizes you can BO shoulders and leave center for hood attachment—see assembly notes below.
Left Front (work Right Front symmetrically)
Using ribbing needle (US 5):
- CO 34 (37, 40, 43) sts.
- Work 1 x 1 rib for 1 in / 2.5 cm.
Change to US 6:
- Work stockinette maintaining rib at front edge (first st of every RS row and last st of every WS row in garter or seed if you want a facing; here we will keep a garter tab—K every RS row on the first 4 sts to form a button band).
- Work even until piece measures same as back to armhole (measure from CO): 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7) in / 14 (15, 16.5, 18) cm.
- Shape armhole: BO 3 (3, 4, 4) sts at armhole edge once. Continue even until front matches back to shoulder line.
- At neck edge, when piece measures 1.5 in / 4 cm less than back shoulder, begin to shape neck by binding off 2 sts once, then dec 1 st every RS row 2 (2, 3, 3) times.
- When front reaches same armhole height as back, BO shoulder sts to match back shoulder shaping.
Sleeves (make 2)
- CO 36 (36, 40, 44) sts on US 5; work 1 in / 2.5 cm 1 x 1 rib.
- Change to US 6 and increase 1 st at each end every 6th row 4 (5, 6, 7) times — total sts become 44 (46, 52, 58).
- Work until sleeve measures 5 (6, 6.5, 7) in / 13 (15, 16.5, 18) cm from CO (or desired length to underarm).
- Shape cap: BO 3 (3, 4, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end every RS row 6 (7, 7, 8) times, then BO remaining sts.
Hood
You can knit hood as one piece or two halves and seam; written as two halves seamed for neat center.
Right hood half:
- Using US 5, CO 40 (44, 48, 52) sts including 4 sts garter border at front edge (K every row).
- Work in stockinette with 4-st garter front border until hood depth measures 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7) in / 14 (15, 16.5, 18) cm from CO (measure along center back seam after seaming to check).
- Begin crown shaping: K2tog at end of RS row and SSK at beginning of next RS row on alternate rows to shape top—decrease 1 st each side every 6th row 4 (5, 5, 6) times, then every 4th row until 6 (6, 6, 6) sts remain. BO remaining sts.
- Make left hood half to mirror.
Wings (make 2)
Small stylized wings shaped in garter stitch.
- CO 21 (23, 25, 27) sts on US 6.
- Row 1 (RS): K across.
- Row 2 (WS): K2, YO, K to last 2 sts, YO, K2.
- Repeat Rows 1–2 for 6 (7, 8, 9) pattern repeats or until wing length measures approx 2.5 (3, 3.5, 4) in / 6.5 (7.5, 9, 10) cm. At the same time shape scallops by decreasing at the top edge every other garter ridge: On RS rows, K2tog near outer edges to create feather points; on WS rows simply knit.
- Work until you have 5 feather points (or your desired look) then BO loosely. Block wings to shape and sew to upper back, slightly angled.
I-cord / Cord for Pompom
- Using 3 sts on US 5 DPNs, make an I-cord about 3–4 in / 8–10 cm long for the pompom cord. Attach pompom to one end and secure the other end inside hood seam at center back.
Finishing & Assembly
- Block pieces lightly to measurements.
- Seam shoulders with mattress stitch.
- Set in sleeves: align center of sleeve cap with shoulder seam and ease the cap into the armhole; sew using mattress stitch.
- Sew side and sleeve seams.
- Neck & Hood: pick up sts around neck edge and knit the hood to fit the neck opening, or sew hood halves to neck opening and seam center back. If you left shoulders open earlier, seam hood in as you go.
- Sew wings to back: position wings symmetrically on upper back, about 1.5 (2, 2.5, 3) in / 4 (5, 6.5, 7.5) cm below the shoulder seam. Sew with small invisible stitches; secure well.
- Make pompom: wind yarn to make a small pompom about 1–1.5 in / 2.5–4 cm across for S–M and up to 2 in / 5 cm for L–XL. Attach to I-cord and sew I-cord into center back of hood at peak. Knot and secure inside.
- Weave in all ends. Attach buttons if using a button closure at front (or leave open).
Optional Decorative Details
- Embroider a tiny nose or eyes on the hood front for a kawaii face using leftover yarn/thread. For safety with babies, avoid small sewn-on pieces; prefer embroidered features.
- Add a contrasting color stripe around the hem and sleeve cuffs by working 2 rows of contrast yarn before ribbing.
Sizing Adjustments
To lengthen the body or sleeves add stitch multiples of 4 (to maintain ribbing/facing symmetry) and knit extra rows before armhole shaping. For a slouchier hood, add 1–2 inches / 2.5–5 cm to hood depth.
Care
Machine wash gentle in cool water and lay flat to dry, unless your yarn label has different instructions.
Troubleshooting
- If gauge is too loose: drop a needle size.
- If armholes are too small: bind off fewer sts at armhole or add a short set-in sleeve tab.
