Needles & Notions
- Recommended needles (use length to hold all stitches comfortably):
- Smaller circular for neck/rib: US 6 (UK old 8) / 4.0 mm
- Main circular for body & yoke: US 7 (UK old 7) / 4.5 mm (use if you need a looser fabric for gauge in the round)
- Double-pointed needles or 16–24" circulars for small circumferences if you prefer magic-loop for sleeves: same sizes as above
- Stitch markers (4 markers for raglan), tapestry needle, waste yarn or stitch holder for sleeve stitches, scrap yarn for provisional cast-on (optional), removable stitch markers for colourwork repeats, bobbins or yarn management tools (optional)
Gauge
22 sts & 28 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette using 4.0 mm needles (in the round). Gauge after blocking in colourwork may appear slightly tighter; check and adjust needle size if necessary.
Techniques Used
- Top-down raglan increases
- Stranded colourwork / Fair Isle (two-colour floats across back only short distances)
- Jogless stripes for circular colour changes (optional)
- Knitwise and purlwise increases (M1L/M1R or kfb as desired)
- Ribbing, short-row shaping not required
Abbreviations
- k = knit
- p = purl
- RS = right side
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- MC = Main Colour
- CC1, CC2, etc = Contrast Colours
- yo = yarn over
- M1L = make 1 left (lift bar from back to front, knit through front loop)
- M1R = make 1 right (lift bar from front to back, knit through back loop)
- k2tog = knit two together
Motif Charts & Placement (overview)
Two motif sizes are used for the yoke repeats so they tile comfortably between raglan increase lines. Charts are provided as schematic grids below—each grid cell = 1 stitch. Colours are indicated by letters: B=background (MC), W=white CC, Y=yellow CC, R=red CC, P=pink CC, D=brown/dark CC. These are schematic; a printable chart may be easier to follow—use this as a working guide.
Moogle motif: 21 sts wide x 21 rounds high (simple face + pompom)
Row examples (top to bottom, abbreviated):
..B B Y B B ... (center accents)
...P P B P P ...
...W W W W ... (face)
...R R R ... (pompom)
Chocobo motif: 19 sts wide x 19 rounds high (profile of bird)
Row examples:
..Y Y Y Y ... (body)
..Y Y D Y ... (eye/beak)
..D D D ... (beak/outline)
Layout across the yoke: motifs are alternated across the round in a repeating sequence: [Moogle] - 6–8 BC (background) - [Chocobo] - 6–8 BC - repeat, positioned so motifs sit between the raglan increase markers, not over them. Adjust spacing so motifs do not fall on raglan markers; if needed, shift an entire motif over by a few stitches.
Construction Overview
- Cast on small neckline and work short rib (k1,p1 or k2,p2 as you prefer)
- Begin raglan increase sequence and carry out stranded colourwork chart over established stitch counts for the yoke. Increase on raglan rounds only (see pattern rounds below).
- When yoke depth reaches target (see measurements below), separate sleeve stitches onto holders and continue body in the round working colourwork until yoke pattern completes (or switch to MC if you prefer plain body).
- Work body to desired length, add hem rib, bind off.
- Return to sleeve stitches, set on DPNs or magic-loop and work sleeve rounds with optional colourwork accents. Work to desired sleeve length and bind off with rib.
Neck & Yoke - Detailed
Note: This pattern intentionally uses a measurement-based yoke rather than fixed final stitch counts so you can customize fit and motif placement.
1) Cast on and neck rib
- Cast on (provisional cast-on optional) 80 (88, 96, 104, 112, 120) sts using smaller circular (US6 / 4.0 mm). Join to work in the round, place marker for beginning of round.
- Work 1.5 in / 4 cm of k1, p1 rib (or k2,p2 if preferred). Switch to larger circular if using.
2) Set up for raglan increases
- Place four raglan markers evenly: after setup round we will treat the raglan as four increase points: [Marker] sleeve1 [Marker] front [Marker] sleeve2 [Marker] back
- Typical raglan increase round (every alternate round):
- On RS increases: *k to 1 st before marker, M1R; slip marker; k1 (the marker stitch); M1L; k to next marker; repeat across entire round.* This yields +8 sts every increase round.
3) Begin colourwork yoke
- Start following the charted colourwork for the yoke immediately after a full set-up round. When carrying two colours, hold yarns so floats do not exceed 5 stitches; twist yarns at the back to avoid long floats.
- Increase rounds are worked in MC unless the increase falls directly into a motif; if a motif is interrupted by an increase, maintain motif integrity by working increases in the background colour where possible (or shift motif placement by a stitch on the previous round).
- Work increase rounds every 2 rounds (i.e., increase round, then 1 plain round in established pattern) until yoke depth reaches approximately:
- XS: 8.5 in / 21.5 cm from cast-on
- S: 9 in / 23 cm
- M: 9.5 in / 24 cm
- L: 10 in / 25.5 cm
- XL: 10.5 in / 27 cm
- 2X: 11 in / 28 cm
Separating Sleeves
When yoke depth as above is reached and you have completed a full chart repeat across the round, separate:
- Work to first raglan marker, remove sleeve sts onto waste yarn or stitch holder (do not join), continue to next raglan, remove sts for body or store on holder for second sleeve—keep body stitches on the needle. You will have 4 raglan seams lying on the needle; slip markers accordingly.
- After removing both sleeve sets, join body in the round and continue colourwork pattern around the body (either continuing the yoke charts or switching to MC for a solid body). If continuing charts, make sure the stitch count around the body matches chart repeat multiples; add or remove background stitches as needed to balance.
Body
Work in pattern until desired body length from underarm:
- Short length: 16 in / 41 cm
- Standard: 18 in / 46 cm
- Long: 20 in / 51 cm
Then work 2–3 in / 5–8 cm of rib in smaller needles and bind off loosely in pattern.
Sleeves
Transfer sleeve sts back to needles. Pick up 2–4 sts at underarm to close gap if necessary. Work in the round:
- Option A - Plain sleeves: switch to MC and knit even until sleeve length desired, decrease a few sts if needed for shaping and finish with rib cuff 2–3 in / 5–8 cm
- Option B - Colourwork cuff/band: work a strip of charted motif or two-colour stripe before cuff rib
Finishing
- Weave in ends carefully. For stranded colourwork, twist carried yarns occasionally to reduce floats sitting loose after blocking.
- Block gently to shape motif and even stitches. Colourwork tends to relax and even out after blocking.
- Optional: duplicate stitch small highlights (eye, pompom shine) if you prefer texture instead of carrying a tiny contrasting strand.
Notes & Tips
- Always swatch in colourwork to ensure gauge; two-colour knitting tightens fabric. Adjust needle sizes for stranded sections if needed (sometimes one size up for stranded rows improves drape).
- When carrying two colours, keep floats loose enough to allow block and wear without puckering—no more than 5 stitches for floats if possible.
- Place raglan markers and motif repeats relative to those markers in the first pattern row so you maintain even spacing as you increase.
- If motifs land awkwardly on increases, slide a motif left or right by inserting an extra background stitch before the motif repeat on the previous chart repeat round.
- Keep notes every time you change a motif placement so you can repeat symmetric placement across back and front.
