Mushroom Guy — Critter Stitch Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
Size: approx. 4–5” (10–13 cm) tall (depends on yarn/hook).Make a tight fabric so stuffing doesn't show; adjust hook if needed.
Materials
- Yarn (worsted/aran weight recommended): Main cap color (red) – 25 g / 0.88 oz – approx. 55 m / 60 yds; Stem/body color (cream/off-white) – 25 g / 0.88 oz – approx. 55 m / 60 yds; Spot/contrast color (white, yellow, or light beige) – small scraps (5 g / 0.18 oz – approx. 10–15 m / 11–16 yds).
- Hook / Needle size (choose for tight amigurumi): Recommended: US G/6 (4.0 mm) / UK 8 / Metric 4.0 mm. For a tighter fabric use US E/4 (3.5 mm) / UK 9 / Metric 3.5 mm. (These are common equivalents; use the metric mm as the primary measurement.)
- Safety eyes 9–12 mm (or embroider eyes)
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing
- Tapestry needle, stitch marker, scissors, small amount of sewing thread (matching yarn) for assembly
- Optional: small amount of blush or chalk for cheeks, thin yarn or embroidery floss for mouth
Gauge
Approximate: 14 sc × 16 rnds = 10 cm (4”) using 4.0 mm hook. Gauge is not critical; ensure fabric is dense enough to hold stuffing.
Abbreviations (US)
- ch – chain
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- sc – single crochet
- inc – increase (2 sc in next stitch)
- dec – invisible decrease (sc2tog) or standard decrease
- sl st – slip stitch
- MR – magic ring (magic circle)
- BLO/FLO – back/front loop only
Notes
- Work in continuous (spiral) rounds unless instructed to join. Mark first stitch of each round with a stitch marker.
- Safety eyes are inserted between the indicated rounds before stuffing and closing the head.
- Stuff firmly but evenly. Small pieces like spots and arms are lightly stuffed.
Pattern Overview
Make: Stem/Body (includes head), Cap, Spots (3–6 small circles), Arms (2), optional feet/side stubs.
Stem / Body (worked bottom-up)
Using stem color and 3.5–4.0 mm hook.
R1: MR, 6 sc into ring (6)
R2: inc in each st around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
R5–8: sc around (24) – 4 rounds (length builds the lower stem)
R9: (2 sc, dec) x6 (18)
Stuff lightly the lower tube so it keeps shape.
R10–14: sc around (18) – 5 rounds (neck/transition)
R15: (sc, dec) x6 (12)
R16–19: sc around (12) – 4 rounds (begin head)
Insert safety eyes between rounds 17 and 19 about 6–7 sts apart (adjust for desired expression). Embroider or stitch a small smile between eyes.
R20: (dec, sc) x4 (8)
Stuff head firmly, shape as you stuff.
R21: dec around (4)
Finish off, leave a long tail for closing if needed, weave through remaining sts and close. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Cap (worked top-down, dome with brim)
Using cap color and same hook.
R1: MR, 6 sc into ring (6)
R2: inc in each st around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)
R6: (4 sc, inc) x6 (36)
R7–9: sc around (36) – 3 rounds to build dome depth
R10: (4 sc, dec) x6 (30) – start slight tapering if you want a rounded cap, or skip to keep more dome
R11: sc around (30)
Now make the brim: change to BLO for one round to create a ledge
R12 (brim base): BLO sc around (30)
R13 (ruffle): *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st* repeat around (45) – creates a small ruffle brim. Adjust increases if your counts differ.
Finish, leave a long tail for sewing.
Spots (make 3–6, varying sizes)
Using contrast color.
Small spot A:
R1: MR, 6 sc into ring, sl st to join, fasten off (6)
Medium spot B:
R1: MR, 6 sc into ring (6)
R2: inc in each st around (12), fasten off (12)
Larger spot C:
R1: MR, 6 sc into ring (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x3 (9)
R3: (2 sc, inc) x3 (12), fasten off (12)
Arms (make 2)
Using stem color.
R1: MR, 6 sc into ring (6)
R2–4: sc around (6) – 3 rounds (tube)
R5: (dec, sc) x2 (4)
Stuff lightly, finish off leaving tail for sewing.
Optional Feet / Side Stubs (2)
Make small ovals to help mushroom sit stable.
R1: MR, 6 sc (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x3 (9)
R3: sc around (9)
Fold flat and stitch closed along one side to make an oval. Lightly stuff and sew to bottom.
Assembly
- Block the cap lightly with a damp cloth if your yarn allows, shape to dome.
- Position cap over the top of the stuffed stem/head. The cap sits like a hat; align the brim to cover the top of the head but leave face visible. Sew the cap to the head with whip stitch using the long tail from the cap. Use evenly spaced stitches around the seam so the cap sits snugly.
- Sew spots onto cap. Arrange 3–6 spots across the round top and sides. Use small whip stitches through the center and secure. Add a few tiny spots near the brim if desired.
- Sew arms to sides of stem at about row where the neck meets the body. Stitch firmly through multiple points so arms are secure.
- If adding feet: sew to the base to help the toy sit flat.
- Weave in all ends. Add embroidered mouth below the eyes (a simple curved stitch) and tiny blush to cheeks if desired.
Finishing Touches & Variations
- Embroider freckles or a mustache for personality. Use contrasting thread for a cute look.
- Make a baby mushroom by using thinner yarn and a smaller hook; multiply rounds by two for a tiny trio set.
- Make a bell-shaped cap by reducing increases earlier and adding a longer brim round for floppy effect.
- Use safety eyes or French knot/embroidered eyes for a child-safe toy.
Yardage Summary (approx.)
- Cap color: 25 g / 0.88 oz – ~55 m / 60 yds
- Stem color: 25 g / 0.88 oz – ~55 m / 60 yds
- Contrast color/spots: 5 g / 0.18 oz – ~10–15 m / 11–16 yds
Care
Spot clean if possible; hand wash gently in cool water and reshape while damp. Avoid tumble drying.
Troubleshooting
- Stuffing shows through: switch to a smaller hook or use tighter gauge yarn.
- Cap too big/small: adjust hook size or add/remove increase rounds in cap pattern.
