Pigeon Beanie Knitting Pattern

This pigeon themed beanie is perfect for keeping your head warm with a touch of whimsy. The pattern is designed for DK weight yarn and will give you a cozy and comfortable fit.

Materials

• DK weight yarn in main color (MC) - approximately 150 yards (137 meters)
• DK weight yarn in contrasting color (CC) - approximately 50 yards (46 meters)
• US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles
• US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles
• Cable needle
• Tapestry needle

Gauge

22 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using US 6 (4 mm) needles.

Size

One size fits most adults.

Abbreviations

• K - knit
• P - purl
• C3F - slip 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold in front, knit next 3 stitches, then knit the 3 stitches from cable needle
• C3B - slip 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, knit next 3 stitches, then knit the 3 stitches from cable needle

Instructions

Using US 6 (4 mm) needles and MC:

1. Cast on 96 stitches.
2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
3. Ribbing: *K2, P2, repeat from * to the end of the round. Repeat this round for 1 inch (2.5 cm).
4. Switch to US 8 (5 mm) needles.
5. Pattern round 1: *K4, C3F, K1, C3B, repeat from * to the end of the round.
6. Pattern round 2-8: Knit all stitches.
7. Repeat pattern rounds 1-8 until the hat measures approximately 7 inches (18 cm) from the cast on edge, or desired length.
8. Decrease rounds:

Switch to double-pointed needles or magic loop method when necessary.

Round 1: *K4, k2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round (80 stitches remain).

Round 2: Knit all stitches.

Round 3: *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round (64 stitches remain).

Round 4: Knit all stitches.

Round 5: *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round (48 stitches remain).

Round 6: Knit all stitches.

Round 7: *K1, k2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round (32 stitches remain).

Round 8: Knit all stitches.

Round 9: *K2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round (16 stitches remain).

Finishing:

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the tapestry needle, then slide the needle through the remaining stitches, removing them from the knitting needles. Pull tight to close the top of the hat.

Weave in any loose ends.
