Poppy Pattern Mittens

Materials:
- Yarn: Aran weight yarn in red, green, and black.
- Needles: US 6 (4mm) and US 7 (4.5mm) double pointed needles.
- Tapestry needle
Gauge:
20 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Pattern:
- Cuff: With US 6 (4mm) needles and red yarn, cast on 32 stitches. Join in the round and work k1, p1 ribbing for 2 inches.
- Main Body: Switch to US 7 (4.5mm) needles. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 3 inches.
- Thumb Gusset: Knit 16 stitches, place marker, m1, knit 1, m1, place marker, knit to end of round.
- Next round: Knit to marker, m1, knit to next marker, m1, knit to end of round.
- Repeat the last 2 rounds until there are 12 thumb gusset stitches between markers. Place thumb stitches on holder.
- Hand: Continue knitting in stockinette stitch until piece measures 6 inches from cast-on edge.
- Decrease Rounds: Round 1: *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. Round 2: Knit all stitches. Repeat these 2 rounds until 8 stitches remain.
- Finishing: Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure.
- Thumb: Pick up thumb stitches and divide evenly onto 3 needles. Join yarn and knit in the round until thumb measures 2 inches. Decrease for the top of the thumb by k2tog around. Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, and secure.
Repeat pattern for second mitten.
