32 stitches and 40 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Adult Medium (fits shoe size US 7-9 / UK 5-7)

Instructions

  1. Cast on 64 stitches using the long tail cast on method.
  2. Divide stitches evenly between 3 double-pointed needles (21 stitches on first needle, 21 stitches on second needle, 22 stitches on third needle).
  3. Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
  4. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 6 inches.
  5. Switch to stockinette stitch and knit every round until the leg measures 7 inches from the cast on edge.
  6. Heel Flap: Knit across first needle, turn work, slip 1 purlwise, purl across 32 stitches. Repeat these 2 rows a total of 17 times.
  7. Turn Heel: Row 1: Knit 18, ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: Slip 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before gap, ssk across gap, k1, turn. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until all stitches have been worked.
  8. Gusset: Pick up and knit 17 stitches along the side of the heel flap, knit across the next 32 stitches, pick up and knit 17 stitches along the other side of the heel flap. Rearrange stitches if necessary.
  9. Decrease Round: Needle 1: Knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Needle 2: Knit across. Needle 3: K1, ssk, knit to end of needle.
  10. Repeat Decrease Round until 64 stitches remain.
  11. Foot: Continue knitting in the round until the foot measures 2 inches shorter than desired foot length.
  12. Toes: *K1, ssk, knit to 3 stitches before end of needle, k2tog, k1. Repeat from * on each needle until 8 stitches remain on each needle. Graft toes together using Kitchener stitch.
  13. Weave in ends and block your socks to finish.
