Ribbed Buttoned Waistcoat Pattern
Description:
This pattern will guide you through creating a stylish ribbed buttoned waistcoat, perfect for layering in all seasons.
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (US), Aran yarn (UK), 10-ply yarn (AU), 200g (320m) in main color and 50g (80m) in contrasting color.
- Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) and US 8 (5mm) knitting needles, or sizes needed to obtain gauge.
- Buttons: 5 small buttons for decoration.

Gauge:
20 stitches x 24 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in 2x2 ribbing pattern on larger needles.
Size:
Adult S [M, L, XL] - To fit chest size: 34 [38, 42, 46] inches.
Instructions:
- Back Panel: Using smaller needles, cast on 80 [90, 100, 110] stitches. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 4 inches (10cm).
- Switch to larger needles. Continue in stockinette stitch until piece measures 16 [17, 18, 19] inches from cast on edge, ending with a purl row.
- Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 [7, 8, 9] stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Continue in stockinette stitch for 8 [9, 10, 11] more inches, ending with a purl row.
- Shape Shoulders: Bind off 12 [14, 16, 18] stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining stitches.
- Front Panels (make 2): Work as for Back Panel until armhole measures 6 [6.5, 7, 7.5] inches, ending with a purl row.
- Shape Neckline: Work across 32 [36, 40, 44] stitches, place remaining stitches on holder. Work each side of neck separately, decreasing 1 stitch at neck edge every other row 3 times. Work even until Front matches Back at shoulder edge.
- Buttonhole Band: With RS facing, pick up and knit stitches evenly along front edge. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 1 inch (2.5cm). Place buttonholes on the Right Front Band: K2, YO, K2tog, P2, continue in ribbing. Work 3 more rows in ribbing. Bind off in rib pattern.
- Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. Sew side and underarm seams. Sew buttons on Left Front Band opposite buttonholes.
