14 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch on larger needles
Back: Cast on 60 (68, 76, 84) stitches on smaller needles. Work in K2, P2 rib for 4 inches (10cm).
Next, switch to larger needles and begin ribbed diamond pattern:
Row 1 (RS): K2, P2, *K4, P4; repeat from * to last 6 stitches, K4, P2
Row 2 and all WS rows: P2, K2, *P4, K4; repeat from * to last 6 stitches, P4, K2
Row 3: K2, P2, *C4F, P4; repeat from * to last 6 stitches, C4F, P2
Continue in ribbed diamond pattern until piece measures 16 (17, 18, 19) inches from cast on edge, ending with a WS row.
Shape armholes: Bind off 4 (5, 6, 7) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Work even in pattern until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5) inches, ending with a WS row.
Front: Work as for Back until armholes measure 6 (6.5, 7, 7.5) inches, ending with a WS row.
Shape neck: Work across 18 (22, 26, 30) stitches, place center 24 (24, 24, 24) stitches on holder, join a second ball of yarn and work across remaining 18 (22, 26, 30) stitches. Work both sides at once, decreasing 1 stitch at each neck edge every other row twice.
Join shoulder seams. With smaller needles, pick up and knit stitches along neck edge. Work in K2, P2 rib for 2 inches (5cm). Bind off in rib. Sew side and sleeve seams. Weave in all ends.
