Rosette Motif for a Beanie (Crochet primary, Knit variant included)
Two small, portable rosette applique designs you can use to decorate a beanie: a crochet rosette (three sizes) and a compact knitted rosette option. Each rosette is worked flat and sewn onto the finished hat; instructions include alternate sizes and a two-layer option for a fuller flower.
Materials
- Yarn: Medium/Worsted weight yarn (US 4 / UK 8 ply)
- Suggested sample: 50 g (1.75 oz) / approx 115 yd (105 m) per rosette (you'll use <10 g for a small rosette; one 50 g skein will make several)
- Crochet hooks (choose by desired rosette size):
- Small rosette: 3.5 mm (US 4 / UK old 10)
- Medium rosette: 4.0 mm (US G/6 / UK old 8)
- Large rosette: 5.0 mm (US H/8 / UK old 6)
- Knitting needles for knit variant: US 8 (5.0 mm / UK old 6) or use size that gives a similar fabric to the crochet sample
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends
- Sewing needle and matching thread or small safety pin to attach
- Optional: small button or bead for center embellishment
Notes on sizes and conversions
Needle/hook conversions given above use common modern US label / UK old label / metric mm. If your yarn is lighter/heavier or you want a stiffer/floppier rosette, change hook size accordingly. Imperial and metric yarn amounts are listed in the Materials section.
Abbreviations (US crochet terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- st(s): stitch(es)
Gauge (approx, for medium rosette sample)
Unblocked rosette diameter (medium with 4.0 mm hook): about 3.5" / 9 cm. Gauge is not critical; adjust hook for desired size.
Crochet Rosette — Construction Overview
We create a small center disc then make petal loops and work petals into those loops. This gives a good, layered rosette that lies nicely on a beanie.
Medium rosette (recommended default) — approx 3.5" / 9 cm
Hook: 4.0 mm (US G/6 / UK old 8). Yarn: worsted.
- Make a magic ring (or ch 4 and join with sl st to form ring).
- Round 1 (center): ch 1 (does NOT count as st), work 12 sc into ring. Join with sl st to first sc. (12 sc)
- Round 2 (loops for petals): *ch 3, sl st in next st;* repeat from * to * around — you will make 12 ch-3 loops; join with sl st. (12 loops)
- Round 3 (petals): In each ch-3 loop work: (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc). Sl st to base of next loop after finishing each petal. After finishing all 12 petals, fasten off and weave ends.
Optional finish: sew a small button or bead in the center for extra detail.
Small rosette — approx 2.25" / 5.5 cm
Hook: 3.5 mm (US 4 / UK old 10). Work same pattern but use ch-2 loops in Round 2 and make smaller petals: in each ch-2 loop work (sc, 2 dc, sc) for compact petals. This creates a neat small applique good for baby hats.
Large rosette — approx 4.5" / 11.5 cm (two-layered)
Hook: 5.0 mm (US H/8 / UK old 6). Work Medium rosette through Round 3. Then add a second petal round to make it fuller:
- After finishing Round 3, join with sl st to the back or between petals where there is a gap.
- *ch 4, sl st into the space between next two petals* around to create 12 ch-4 loops; join.
- In each ch-4 loop work: (sc, 2 hdc, 5 dc, 2 hdc, sc). Finish and fasten off. Weave ends.
Optional shaping & stiffness
To make petals hold shape: spray lightly with a fabric stiffener (or a 50/50 water+PVA glue mix), shape petals and pin while drying. For a softer look, block gently with steam from a distance.
Attaching the Rosette to a Beanie
- Position rosette on the beanie where you want it — side of brim, off-center, or on top.
- Sew with matching yarn and a yarn needle using small whipstitches through the base round (center disc) to the hat, catching only a few fibers so stitches don't show on the petals.
- For removable option sew a small (flat) snap or sew a button on hat and a loop on rosette back, or attach a short safety pin/ brooch back.
Knitted Rosette Variant (compact, textured)
Use this if you prefer knitting or want a flatter textured flower.
Materials: same yarn. Needles: US 8 (5.0 mm / UK old 6) or a size to match the sample.
- Cast on 24 stitches. Row 1: k across. Row 2: k2tog across (12 sts). Row 3: k across. Row 4: k2tog across (6 sts). Row 5: knit 1 row. Bind off. You now have a small wedge that tapers.
- Make 6 identical wedges (repeat steps 1–4 five more times) — you will have 6 petal wedges.
- Fold each wedge lengthwise with garter/fabric side out and whipstitch base to make the petal shape.
- Sew the 6 petals together, arranging them in a circle (overlap a little so the center looks full). Sew through the bases tightly and add a few stitches in the center to anchor.
- Finish by sewing a button or bead in the center if desired and weave in ends.
Variations & Tips
- Two-color rosette: change color at the end of Round 1 (or for Round 3) for contrasting petals.
- Beaded center: add seed beads or a small button for sparkle.
- Scale: smaller hook = smaller tighter rosette; larger hook = larger/floppier rosette.
Care
Hand wash the finished beanie (and applique) gently according to yarn label. If a stiffener was used on the rosette, follow the stiffener's care instructions.
Troubleshooting
- If petals are too small: increase hook size 0.5–1 mm or increase dc counts in petals.
- If rosette is floppy: use smaller hook, a denser petal (more sc/hdc), or a light stiffener.
