25 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Using brown yarn, cast on 48 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.
Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 inch.
Switch to stockinette stitch and knit every round until piece measures 6 inches from the cast-on edge.
On the next round, knit 24 stitches, place marker, knit 12 stitches, place marker, knit remaining 12 stitches. This marks the beginning of the heel.
Continue knitting in the round until piece measures 2 inches from marker.
Begin heel flap: Work back and forth in rows on the 24 heel stitches in stockinette stitch for 1 inch.
Using tan yarn, join yarn at the end of the heel flap. Pick up and knit 12 stitches along the edge of the heel flap.
Knit across the 24 instep stitches.
Pick up and knit 12 stitches along the other edge of the heel flap. Knit across the first 12 heel stitches. This marks the new beginning of the round.
Knit in the round in stockinette stitch until piece measures 2 inches from the end of the heel flap.
Begin toe decreases: Knit to 3 stitches before first marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, SSK, knit to 3 stitches before second marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, SSK, knit to end of round.
Repeat toe decreases every other round until 24 stitches remain.
Continue decreasing every round until 8 stitches remain.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close toe.
Weave in all ends and block your socks to shape.
