Single Honeycomb Column on Stockingknit — Panel / Scarf
Clear, modern single-column honeycomb set into a stocking (stockinette) background. Worked flat (instructions included for in-the-round), this pattern places a 12-stitch honeycomb cable column centered between stocking panels with a simple garter edge so the panel lies flat. Repeat the 8-row honeycomb pattern for length.
Finished measurements (sample)
- Width: 8 in / 20 cm
- Length: 60 in / 152 cm (adjust to taste)
Materials
- Yarn: DK / Light worsted (8-ply) — approx 350 yards / 320 metres (Imperial: 350 yds, Metric: 320 m)
- Needles: US 6 / UK 8 / 4.0 mm (recommended). Alternatives for a looser fabric: US 7 / UK 7 / 4.5 mm.
- Cable needle (or spare double-pointed needle) for cable crosses
- Tapestry needle, stitch markers, blocking tools
Gauge
20 sts and 28 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stocking stitch, blocked, on US 6 / 4.0 mm needles. Gauge is important for overall width — change needle size if needed.
Abbreviations
- k = knit
- p = purl
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- C6B = Cable 6 Back: slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold to back, knit next 3 sts from left needle, then knit 3 sts from cable needle
- C6F = Cable 6 Front: slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold to front, knit next 3 sts from left needle, then knit 3 sts from cable needle
Notes
- Cast on and sample are written for a centered single honeycomb column with garter edges. You may increase the number of stocking stitch sts each side to widen the panel; keep the honeycomb column centered (12 sts).
- Garter edge: worked as knit on every row when working flat so edges remain stable. If you plan to work in-the-round, use a 4-st seed stitch border instead of garter (garter is not produced in-the-round).
- Honeycomb repeat: 8 rows; work these rows repeatedly for length.
Stitch multiple
Multiple of 12 (honeycomb column) + 8 (stocking panels, 4 each side) + 8 (garter edges, 4 each side) = 36 sts total for the sample. You can add any multiple of 12 to widen (keeping the edge & panel counts as you like).
Sample cast-on
Cast on 36 sts.
Layout
- Garter edge: 4 sts (border) - Left stocking panel: 8 sts (stockinette) - Honeycomb column: 12 sts - Right stocking panel: 8 sts - Garter edge: 4 sts
Pattern — worked flat (RS and WS rows)
Rows 1–8 form the honeycomb repeat. Work garter edge sts in garter (knit every row). Work stocking panels in stockinette: on RS rows knit, on WS rows purl.
Row 1 (RS): K4 (border), K8 (left stocking panel), K12 (honeycomb: see row), K8 (right stocking panel), K4 (border)
Row 2 (WS): K4 (border, knit for garter), P8, P12, P8, K4
Row 3 (RS): K4, K8, K3, C6B, K3, K8, K4
Row 4 (WS): K4, P8, P12, P8, K4
Row 5 (RS): K4, K8, K12, K8, K4
Row 6 (WS): K4, P8, P12, P8, K4
Row 7 (RS): K4, K8, K3, C6F, K3, K8, K4
Row 8 (WS): K4, P8, P12, P8, K4
Repeat Rows 1–8 for length.
How the honeycomb column reads
The 12-st honeycomb column (center) is worked in these 8 rows as shown above. C6B on Row 3 twists the center cluster right-to-left; C6F on Row 7 twists left-to-right — alternating crosses create the honeycomb cells.
Pattern worked in-the-round (notes)
- Garter edge won’t be garter in-the-round; substitute a 4-st seed stitch border on each edge if you need a reversible edge.
- When working in-the-round, work the RS rows exactly as written. WS rows are worked as written (purl rounds) so the stocking panels still read as stockinette.
Finishing
- When you reach desired length, work final setup row to mirror the pattern, then bind off loosely in pattern (knit the knit sts on RS rows; purl the purl sts on WS rows as needed to maintain edge tension).
- Weave in ends with a tapestry needle.
- Block lightly to measurements: pin edges straight, steam or wet-block as appropriate for yarn fibre. Honeycomb cables will open and settle; blocking helps the pattern read clearly.
Troubleshooting & tips
- To keep cables tidy, make sure your cable needle stitches are slipped in the correct order and worked tightly enough to avoid ladders between crossing sections.
- If you prefer sharper honeycomb cells, block after knitting a few repeats to check how the fabric relaxes and adjust needle size if needed.
