Materials
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, category 4 recommended. Typical sample yarn: 200 yards 183 meters per 100 g skein. Yardage per size approximate: Baby 40 yd 37 m, Toddler 60 yd 55 m, Child 90 yd 82 m, Teen/Small Adult 100 yd 91 m, Adult Medium 150 yd 137 m, Adult Large 200 yd 183 m. Use best yarn to hand feel preference.
- Hook sizes (see gauge to choose): Primary hook US I-9 5.5 mm (UK old 5 5.5 mm) for a fitted hat; for slouchier fabric use US J-10 6.0 mm (UK old 4 6.0 mm). For a firmer brim or tighter gauge try US H-8 5.0 mm (UK old 6 5.0 mm). Note conversions shown as US name, UK old label and metric mm. Always swatch.
- Notions: tapestry needle for weaving ends, stitch marker, scissors. Optional pompom or buttons.
Gauge
Approximate gauge using worsted weight yarn and 5.5 mm hook: 14 hdc x 8 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm. Gauge measured in half double crochet worked in rounds. If your gauge has more stitches per 4 inches, go up a hook size. If fewer stitches, go down a hook size. Gauge affects fit more than length.

Notes
- Pattern written in US terms. UK equivalents given in parentheses above.
- Work in continuous rounds with a stitch marker at start of each round unless stated otherwise. When rounds are joined, note that joins create a visible seam; for seamless look work spiral style with marker.
- Use magic ring for tidy crown start; chain 2 does not equal hdc, use magic ring method described below if you prefer tidy center.
Gaugeable Crown Increase Method
We use a simple star increase progression based on starting with 10 hdc in magic ring. Each increase round adds 10 stitches so totals progress 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 etc. Work increase rounds until crown reaches target diameter for chosen size as listed below.
Magic Ring with 10 hdc
Make magic ring, work 10 hdc into ring, pull tail to close. Place marker at first hdc. R1 10 hdc (10)
Crown Increases
R2 2 hdc in each st around, move marker (20). R3 *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* repeat around (30). R4 *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next* repeat around (40). R5 *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next* repeat around (50). Continue this pattern increasing the number of even hdc between increases by 1 each round until the flat circle measures the recommended crown diameter across up to the point listed below.
Approximate flat crown diameters to stop increases
- Baby stop when flat circle measures 6 inches 15 cm
- Toddler 6.5 inches 16.5 cm
- Child 7 inches 18 cm
- Teen/Small Adult 8 inches 20.5 cm
- Adult Medium 9 inches 23 cm
- Adult Large 10 inches 25.5 cm
Measurement tip: Lay circle flat and measure across widest point. If slight cupping occurs, add one more increase round then check again.
Body
After you have reached the crown diameter for your size, work even rounds of hdc until the hat measures the depth listed in Finished Circumference and Hat Depths from the crown top to the desired brim placement minus brim height. For example for Adult Medium depth 9 inches and a 2 inch brim, stop main body at 7 inches and begin brim rounds.
Even rounds example: Rn hdc in each st around; place marker at first st and work in spiral. Maintain stitch count from final increase round.
Brim Options
1 Folded Brim - Simple
- Switch to a slightly smaller hook if you want a firm brim.
- Work 4-8 rounds of sc through BLO only. Work rounds until brim depth desired. Fold brim up and sew edge to inside for a clean folded brim.
2 Ribbed Brim - Elastic Fit
- Work 8-12 rounds of alternating FPhdc and BPhdc around to form ribs. Example round: *FPhdc around next st, BPhdc around next st* repeat. Continue until brim height desired. Fold or leave unfolded.
3 Rolled Brim
- With sc or hdc, work 6-10 rounds without changing stitch base; edge will roll naturally for a casual look.
Decrease for Close Fit Crown (Optional)
If you prefer a more tapered crown rather than slouch, decrease 6 stitches evenly every other round near the top of the hat before finishing brim. Example: before final 2 inches of height for fitted hat, work one round with 6 evenly spaced hdc dec to remove 6 sts. Repeat next even round if tighter shaping desired.
Finishing
- Fasten off leaving a tail, use tapestry needle to weave tail through last round to close any small gap and to secure. Weave in all ends neatly on wrong side.
- Optional pompom: attach with tail and secure with knot at inside, stitch down for durability.
- Block lightly to even stitches if using wool. Acrylic can be steamed briefly from a distance; do not press directly.
Sizing Adjustments
- To make more slouch: after reaching crown diameter use one hook size larger and work extra even rounds until desired depth.
- To make more fitted: use smaller hook, fewer even rounds, or work brim tighter with smaller hook.
- If you need to increase/decrease circumference by a small amount, add or remove a repeat of an even round to change total rounds by needed increments. Measure as you go.
Troubleshooting
- If hat skews or ruffles, your increase rounds may not be even. Count sts each round and adjust to keep totals steady.
- If crown has a hole: weave tail through center and cinch slightly, or start with a magic circle and pull tight.
Stitch Conversion Reminder
This pattern uses US stitch names. Quick conversion: US sc = UK dc, US hdc = UK htr, US dc = UK tr.
