Snoopy Baby Bib - Crochet Pattern
Make a sweet, wearable Snoopy bib for baby using a soft worsted/DK weight yarn, a simple bib body, a secure button strap and a small crocheted or embroidered Snoopy applique. This pattern includes three sizes, full assembly and finishing instructions. Designed for crocheters; knitting-equivalent needle sizes are given for knitters who want to adapt.
Materials
- Yarn: Smooth, machine-washable worsted/light-worsted (DK) weight yarn. Colors: Main color (MC) white, Contrast A (CA) black, Contrast B (CB) red for trim/neckline if you like. Yarn amount (per size): Newborn: 75 yds / 69 m (approx. 25 g); 0-6 months: 100 yds / 91 m (approx. 35 g); 6-24 months: 140 yds / 128 m (approx. 50 g). Tension/yarn substituted will change yardage.
- Hook / Needle sizes (equivalents): Crochet hook: US G/6 (4.0 mm) | UK (old) 8 | Metric 4.0 mm. Alternative slightly larger for drapier fabric: US H/8 (5.0 mm) | UK (old) 6 | Metric 5.0 mm. If knitting instead: Knitting needles suggested US 6 (4.0 mm) | UK (old) 8 | Metric 4.0 mm (for tighter fabric) or US 8 (5.0 mm) | UK (old) 6 | Metric 5.0 mm (for drapier).
- Notions: 1 small button (approx. 12-15 mm), tapestry needle, stitch markers, scrap yarn for holding stitches, sewing needle and matching thread for sewing button, scissors, optional lightweight waterproof bib liner.
Gauge
Gauge for body with 4.0 mm hook: 16 sc x 18 rows = 4" (10 cm) square. Gauge is not critical for a baby bib but will affect finished size and yarn required. Adjust hook size if necessary.
Sizes & Finished Measurements (approx.)
- Newborn / 0-3 months: width at widest point 7.5" (19 cm), length from top to bottom 7" (18 cm)
- 0-6 months: width 8.5" (22 cm), length 8" (20.5 cm)
- 6-24 months: width 9.5" (24 cm), length 9" (23 cm)
Abbreviations (US crochet terms)
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- sl st = slip stitch
- inc = increase (2 sc in same st)
- dec = single crochet decrease (sc2tog)
- RS = right side, WS = wrong side
Notes
- Work in US terms. If you prefer UK crochet names: US sc = UK dc, US dc = UK treble.
- Pattern uses simple shaping for a rounded bib; you can adapt length or width by adding/subtracting foundation chains and rows evenly.
- Applique placement: centered on bib lower third unless you prefer off-center. Sew securely and weave ends neatly.
Body - Crochet
This creates a slightly curved, rounded bib body worked flat. Work a rectangle then shape top/neck and round edges.
Foundation chain (ch): Newborn: ch 31. 0-6 months: ch 35. 6-24 months: ch 39. (Chain should be an odd number for symmetry; change in multiples of 2 to alter width.)
- Row 1 (RS): sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (Total stitches = foundation chain -1)
- Row 2: ch 1, sc across. Repeat Row 2 until you reach the indicated row counts for length before shaping: Newborn: work 18 rows total. 0-6 months: 20 rows total. 6-24 months: 22 rows total. (These counts include Row 1.)
- Shape lower rounded edge (optional): To make a softly curved bottom, work 2 more rows decreasing 1 sc at each end on each row: Row A: ch1, sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog. Turn. Row B: ch1, sc across. Repeat Row A + Row B once more if you want a deeper curve. If you prefer a straight bottom, skip decreases.
- Next shape neck top: Divide the work across the center to make two shoulder pieces with a neck gap. Find center stitch and mark with a scrap yarn. Working RS facing, join with a sc at left of center and work across shoulder to edge, finish off. Reattach on the right shoulder and work across mirroring the left so you have two shoulder panels and a neck opening in the middle. For newborn: leave center 7 ch (approx. 2.5"/6.5 cm) as neck gap; 0-6 months: leave 8 ch; 6-24 months: leave 9 ch. To shape: you can work the last 4-6 rows of shoulders on each side in dec to create a rounded neckline on each shoulder if desired: at start of shoulder row dec once, at end dec once.
- Neck strap and closure: With RS facing and MC, attach at one neck edge under shoulder, ch enough to reach other side comfortably around baby neck when fastened. Recommended strap chain lengths: Newborn 6" (15 cm) approx. 18 ch; 0-6 months 7.5" (19 cm) approx. 22 ch; 6-24 months 9" (23 cm) approx. 26 ch. After foundation chain for strap, sl st to nearest st on opposite side to make a loop, or make a separate strap worked across and sewn on, leaving a buttonhole loop (ch3 or ch4 and sl st to bib leaving a loop large enough to fasten button). Sew button to opposing shoulder area centered to align with loop. Make sure fastener is out of baby’s mouth reach and stitched very securely.
Edging
- With MC and RS facing, join yarn at any point along edge. Round 1: ch1, sc evenly around entire bib edge including strap and neck opening, placing 3 sc in each rounded corner to help curve, sl st to first sc; fasten off. Option: Work a contrasting single round of reverse sc (crab stitch) in CB (red) for a neat finish.
- Optional decorative row: With CB, join and *sc 3, ch1, skip 1* across for a subtle scallop look (adjust repeats to fit evenly).
Snoopy Applique - Option A: Crochet flat head + ears
Worked in continuous rounds. Use MC white for head, CA black for ear and facial details.
- Head (worked flat, continuous rounds): R1: MR, 6 sc into ring (6). R2: inc around (12). R3: (sc1, inc)*6 (18). R4: (sc2, inc)*6 (24). R5: (sc3, inc)*6 (30). R6-R8: sc around (30) — if you want a slightly oblong oval, in R7 make 2 increases spaced opposite each other (add 2 incs) so final count ~34, producing a gentle oval. Fasten off and weave in ends. Block gently to smooth.
- Ear (make 2, work in CA black): Ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (5 sc), ch1, turn, sc back across in rows to create a tapered ear. Decrease 1 st at tip by sc2tog at one end on final row to form point. Alternatively, Crochet a small oval: MR 6 sc, inc around to 12, sc 2 rounds, shape by decreasing 2 sts one side and finish. Make two, sew to sides of head so they hang slightly downward.
- Nose & eye embroidery: Use CA black and a tapestry needle to embroider eyes as small French knots or single satin stitch ovals. Nose: small oval embroidered at lower-center of head. Mouth & collar: use black embroidery to stitch a small smile. For Snoopy’s collar, embroider or add a small crocheted narrow strip in CB red and sew under head edge.
- Sewing applique to bib: Position head approximately 2" (5 cm) up from bottom center on newborn, or 2.5" (6.5 cm) on larger sizes. Pin in place, whipstitch around edges using matching MC to secure. Make sure all sewn pieces are flat and ends are woven and trimmed.
Snoopy Applique - Option B: Surface embroidery (simpler)
Crochet a small smooth oval patch of white fabric (approx. 3"/7.5 cm wide for newborn, 3.5"/9 cm for larger) using a 4.0 mm hook and sc rounds to make a flat disc. Place on bib and embroider Snoopy outline, eye, nose and ear in black yarn using backstitch and satin stitch. This requires less 3D sewing and is very secure when sewn to bib.
Finishing
- Weave in all ends securely on wrong side. Sew button firmly and test closure. Trim any remaining stray fibers.
- Optional: Add a small backing (cotton fabric or waterproof liner) to the bib interior for extra baby-safe protection. Sew or topstitch liner to inside, leaving seam allowance, and secure before adding applique.
- Wash test: machine wash gentle, cold, dry flat to retain shape. Avoid fabric softener if using waterproof backing.
Variations & Tips
- Make the bib reversible by working two identical bib bodies, placing RS together and slip-stitching or single-crocheting around leaving a gap for turning; turn and topstitch, then add applique to one side only or both.
- If you are worried about small parts, embroider Snoopy directly onto the bib with secure stitching instead of sewing on buttons or small sewn pieces.
- Adjust strap placement and length to suit your child; always check fit and button placement so it cannot be pulled into baby’s mouth.
Abbreviated Stitch Guide
MR = magic ring. sc2tog: insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, yo and draw through all loops on hook.
Care Instructions
Machine wash on gentle cycle, cold water. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry low if yarn label allows. Remove any backing before ironing. Check label of your chosen yarn for specific care.
Troubleshooting
- Too narrow/wide? Adjust foundation chain in multiples of 2 to increase/decrease width; re-check gauge.
- Applique puckering? Use slightly larger hook for applique or block applique before sewing. Flatten gently when sewing with even tension.
- Button loop too tight? Make a longer chain loop or use a larger button; ensure it’s secure.
