Steeked Cardigan Pattern
This steeked cardigan pattern combines the stability of a seamless construction with the versatility of steeking. Using a smooth worsted weight yarn, this cardigan is perfect for intermediate knitters looking to expand their skills.
Materials
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (10 ply, UK Aran weight), 100% wool, 1000 yards (900 meters)
- Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm), UK 7, 4.5 mm needles
- Crochet hook: US G/6 (4 mm), UK 8, 4 mm
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Gauge
20 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Instructions
- Using long-tail cast on, cast on 120 stitches.
- Work in 2x2 ribbing for 1 inch.
- Switch to stockinette stitch and knit until piece measures 15 inches from cast on edge.
- Begin armhole shaping: Bind off 4 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
- Decrease row: Knit 1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, knit 1. Repeat decrease row every other row 5 more times.
- Continue in stockinette stitch until piece measures 25 inches from cast on edge.
- Shape neck: Knit 36 stitches, slip the next 48 stitches onto waste yarn, join a new ball of yarn, knit to end. Working on both sides at the same time, decrease 1 stitch at neck edge every other row 8 times.
- Work even until armhole measures 8 inches.
- Place center 24 stitches on holder for neck.
- Work each side of neck separately, decreasing 1 stitch at neck edge every other row 4 times.
- Bind off all stitches.
- Join shoulder seams.
- Pick up and knit stitches along armhole edge. Work in the round in stockinette stitch for 2 inches. Bind off.
- With RS facing, pick up and knit stitches along front edges and around neck. Work in 2x2 ribbing for 1 inch. Bind off.
- Prepare steek: Using a crochet hook, crochet a reinforcement chain on either side of the center front stitches.
- Cut the center front line and unravel to create cardigan opening.
- Block your cardigan to shape.
