Adult Small (Medium, Large)
Using Color A, cast on 36 (40, 44) stitches.
Setup Round: Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Join in a circle, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Round 1: Knit all stitches with Color A.
Round 2: Knit all stitches with Color B.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 for 2 inches.
Thumb Gusset:
Setup Round: Knit 4 (5, 6) stitches with Color A, place a stitch marker, knit to the end of the round with Color A.
Round 1: Knit all stitches with Color A.
Round 2: Knit to 1 stitch before the stitch marker, make 1 right (M1R), knit 1, slip marker, knit to the end of the round with Color A.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 a total of 6 (7, 8) times.
Next Round: Knit all stitches with Color A.
Thumb:
Transfer the 12 (14, 16) thumb stitches to a stitch holder or scrap yarn.
Mitten Body:
Continue working in the established stripe pattern for 3 (3.5, 4) inches from the thumb opening.
Decrease for the Top:
Switch to Color A.
Setup Round: Knit to the last 2 stitches before the marker, knit 2 together (K2tog), slip marker, knit to the end of the round.
Round 1: Knit all stitches.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 a total of 3 times.
Finishing:
Thumb:
Transfer the held thumb stitches back onto double-pointed needles.
Round 1: Knit all stitches in the round.
Round 2: Knit 2 together (K2tog) all stitches in the round.
Break yarn, leaving a long tail.
Weave the tail through the remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure.
Mitten Body:
Weave in any loose ends.
Repeat the instructions to make the second mitten.
