Tank Top with Actual Tank Pattern

This pattern will help you create a stylish tank top with an actual tank incorporated into the design. It's perfect for those hot summer days when you want to stay cool and trendy.

Materials Needed

Gauge

18 stitches x 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using US size 8 (5mm) needles.

Pattern Instructions

Start by measuring your tank top. You'll need to know the length from the bottom hem to the underarm, the width around the chest, and the width around the bottom hem. Write down these measurements, as they will be used to determine the length of your knitting.

Back Panel

  1. Using the smaller needles, cast on stitches equal to the width around the chest of your tank top. Make sure the number of stitches is divisible by 4.
  2. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 inches (5 cm).
  3. Change to the larger needles.
  4. Continue working in stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side) until the piece measures the same length as the measurement from the bottom hem to the underarm of your tank top, minus 2 inches (5 cm).
  5. Switch back to the smaller needles.
  6. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 inches (5 cm).
  7. Bind off all stitches.

Front Panel

The front panel is worked in the same way as the back panel, but with a lower neckline.

  1. Using the smaller needles, cast on stitches equal to the width around the chest of your tank top. Make sure the number of stitches is divisible by 4.
  2. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 inches (5 cm).
  3. Change to the larger needles.
  4. Continue working in stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side) until the piece measures the same length as half of the measurement from the bottom hem to the underarm of your tank top, minus 2 inches (5 cm).
  5. Switch back to the smaller needles.
  6. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 inches (5 cm).
  7. Bind off all stitches.

Finishing

Using a tapestry needle, seam the front and back panels together at the shoulders. Leave an opening for the tank top straps.

Insert the tank top into the knitted panels, aligning the side seams with the side edges of the knitting.

Secure the tank top to the knitting by whipstitching the edge of the tank top to the knitted panels along the armholes and neckline.

Weave in any loose ends and trim off excess yarn.

Your tank top with an actual tank is now ready to wear and show off!
