Top Down Sweater Pattern

This top down sweater pattern is perfect for knitters who prefer to work from the top of the garment down to the waist. It offers a customizable fit and allows you to try on the sweater as you knit to ensure it fits perfectly. Let's get started!

Materials:

Gauge:

20 stitches x 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Instructions:

  1. Using the long-tail cast on method, cast on 80 (88, 96, 104) stitches.
  2. Join in the round being careful not to twist, and place marker for beginning of round.
  3. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 2 inches.
  4. Continue in stockinette stitch until the piece measures approximately 12 (13, 14, 15) inches from the cast on edge.
  5. Separate the sleeves: transfer the first 18 (20, 22, 24) stitches to scrap yarn or stitch holder for the underarms.
  6. Using a backward loop cast on, cast on 4 (4, 6, 6) stitches over the underarm gap.
  7. Continue working in stockinette stitch across the front, knit the sleeve stitches in stockinette stitch, and cast on 4 (4, 6, 6) stitches for the other underarm gap.
  8. Knit across the back stitches, and cast on 4 (4, 6, 6) stitches over the second underarm gap.
  9. Join to work in the round and continue in stockinette stitch until the body measures approximately 18 (19, 20, 21) inches from the cast on edge.
  10. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 2 inches.
  11. Bind off all stitches loosely and weave in ends.

Finishing:

Block your sweater to the correct measurements, and sew in any loose ends. Your top down sweater is now ready to wear!
