Urban Street Boxy Jumper - Medium (Knitting)
Relaxed, dropped-shoulder jumper with bold vertical broken-rib texture for that urban street vibe. Worked flat and seamed for an easy construction and modern boxy fit. This pattern is for one medium size (ready-to-wear finished bust approx 41" / 104 cm). Adjust easily using gauge and notes below.
Yarn
- Aran/Worsted weight yarn (medium/aran). Imperial: 5 x 219 yd / 100 g skeins (approx 1095 yd total). Metric: 5 x 200 m / 100 g skeins (approx 1000 m total). Suggested fiber: 80% wool / 20% nylon or 100% wool for structure and warmth. Substitute with yarns of similar gauge; check gauge swatch.
Needles
- US 7 — UK 7 — 4.5 mm: for ribbing and needles for tighter rib edge
- US 9 — UK 5 — 5.5 mm: for main body fabric (drape)
- Short circular needle (16” / 40 cm) or straight needles for working flat; set of double-pointed needles optional for sleeves if you prefer in-the-round.
Notions
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Measuring tape
- Waste yarn for provisional cast-on (optional)
Gauge
18 sts and 24 rows = 4" / 10 cm in stockinette on US 9 (5.5 mm). Work a 4" / 10 cm square in the main stitch pattern and adjust needle size to match gauge.
Finished Measurements
- Chest circumference (finished): 41" / 104 cm
- Body length (hem to shoulder/top): 24" / 61 cm
- Underarm to cuff (sleeve length): 18" / 46 cm
- Hem rib depth: 3" / 7.5 cm
Abbreviations (US)
- k = knit
- p = purl
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
- k2tog = knit 2 together
- m1 = make one (increase) — lift strand between stitches and knit through back loop
Stitch Pattern — Urban Broken Rib (multiple of 4)
The broken rib gives vertical texture while remaining flat and modern.
RS: *k3, p1* repeat to end.
WS: Work sts as they appear (knit the knits, purl the purls).
Notes
- This pattern is written for a dropped-shoulder, boxy silhouette: front and back are each worked flat (one rectangle each) and seamed. Sleeves are worked flat and set in to create the dropped shoulder look.
- Measurements are finished measurements. If you prefer more or less ease, adjust cast-on using gauge.
- When shaping neck on the front, keep counts exact; the back is worked straight for a clean shoulder line.
Back
- Using US 7 (4.5 mm) needles, cast on 92 sts.
- Work 2x2 rib (k2, p2) for 3" / 7.5 cm, ending on WS.
- Switch to US 9 (5.5 mm). Begin broken-rib pattern: Row 1 (RS): *k3, p1* across. Row 2 (WS): work sts as they appear. Repeat these two rows for texture.
- Work even in pattern until piece measures 21" / 53.5 cm from cast-on edge (measured after rib), ending with a WS row.
- Bind off all sts loosely. Block piece to measurements laid flat: 24" total length including rib.
Front
- Work same as Back through rib and into pattern until piece measures 18.5" / 47 cm from cast-on edge (measured after rib), ending with a WS row.
- Shape neckline: Work to center 20 sts, place center 20 sts on holder (or bind off center 20 sts), then work each side separately.
- Right side: Join yarn at right shoulder edge. Continue in pattern on 36 sts for 3.5" / 9 cm more (this makes the shoulder). Bind off those 36 sts loosely. Return to left side and mirror: work 36 sts for 3.5" / 9 cm and bind off. (If you used a holder for the center 20 sts, you may prefer to graft or pick up and knit a small neckband; see Necckband.)
- Front should now match back length when blocked.
Sleeves (make 2) — flat sleeve for dropped shoulder
- Using US 7 (4.5 mm) needles cast on 56 sts.
- Work 2x2 rib for 3" / 7.5 cm, ending on WS.
- Switch to US 9 (5.5 mm). Begin broken-rib pattern as for body.
- Increase for sleeve width: Work 6 rows even, then on next RS row increase 1 st at each end (m1, work to last 1 st, m1). Repeat this increase every 6th row until you have 72 sts (approx 8 increases total). Maintain the broken-rib pattern through increases; when the increase stitch interrupts the 4-stitch repeat, place a marker and work pattern on either side to keep vertical lines tidy.
- Work even until sleeve measures 18" / 46 cm from cast-on edge (including rib).
- Bind off all sts loosely.
Neckband
- With Front and Back seamed at shoulders (see Finishing), using smaller needles (US 7 / 4.5 mm) pick up and knit around the neck edge approx 90-100 sts (pick up evenly around curve; exact count depends on your blocking and edge). You can pick up into the bound-off center neck edge of the front if you bound off, or graft the center 20 sts of the front if you used holders.
- Work 2x2 rib for 1" / 2.5 cm. Bind off in rib loosely. Alternatively, work a shorter or taller band per preference.
Finishing
- Block front and back flat to measurements.
- Sew shoulder seams: use mattress stitch for an invisible join.
- Set sleeves in: Lay body flat, with RS facing. Align top of sleeve center to shoulder seam (for dropped shoulder lay sleeve so top aligns centered on the straight shoulder seam) and pin along the armhole edge. Sew sleeve to body using mattress stitch or backstitch through yarn (not fabric) for neatness.
- Sew side seams and sleeve seams from hem to cuff. We recommend mattress stitch for body seams and a backstitch or whipstitch for sleeves if you prefer a sturdier seam.
- Weave in ends and block lightly again if needed for final shaping.
Sizing & Adjustments
- To change size, alter cast-on in multiples of 4 to retain stitch pattern. Use gauge to calculate target cast-on: (desired finished bust / 2) x (sts per inch) rounded to nearest multiple of 4 = cast-on for front/back.
- Length: add or subtract rows in the main body before binding off (back) or before neck shaping (front).
- Sleeves: increase or decrease the number of increase rounds to change bicep width. For a slimmer sleeve, reduce final stitch count and adjust increases accordingly.
Care
- Hand wash cold or gentle hand-wash cycle. Lay flat to dry. Avoid tumble drying to maintain shape.
Tips for that urban street finish
- Use a heathered or marled worsted yarn for a textured, city-ready look.
- Add a contrast-color purl stripe (pick up one row of purl in a different color every 6" vertically) for subtle two-tone effect.
- For edgier look, block slightly wider to emphasize boxy silhouette and drop shoulder.
Troubleshooting
- If your fabric is too dense: go up one needle size for main body or use a yarn with longer staple for drape.
- If your sweater is too wide: reduce cast-on in multiples of 4 and re-check gauge.
Schematic & Key Measurements (medium)
- Half-chest (front or back): 20.5" / 52 cm = cast-on 92 sts
- Total length: 24" / 61 cm (including 3" rib)
- Sleeve length: 18" / 46 cm
