Beginner Danish Lace Scarf

A straight, cozy worsted scarf with a single 24-stitch chevron-and-eyelet panel down the center and easy garter-stitch borders. Every wrong-side row of the lace is the same, so you can settle into a relaxing rhythm after a few repeats.

Materials

• 300 yd (275 m) worsted-weight yarn (CYC 4), wool or wool blend
• US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles, straight or circular
• 2 stitch markers
• Tapestry needle
• Blocking mats and T-pins (or blocking wires)

Gauge

18 sts and 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in lace pattern, after blocking.

Use US 8 (5 mm) needles, or the size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge affects width more than fit on a scarf, but blocking is required for the eyelets to open.

Finished Size

9" (23 cm) wide × 60" (152 cm) long, after blocking.

Pattern

Notes

• The lace panel is a multiple of 24 stitches (here, one 24-st repeat). Side stitches are garter stitch (knit every row) so the scarf lies flat and the decreases never fall on the edge.
• Place markers around the 24 lace stitches and leave them in place for the whole lace section.
• After every RS (odd) row you should still have 40 sts: 8 border + 24 lace + 8 border. If the count is off, a missed yo or extra decrease is the usual cause — fix it on that row before continuing.
• On Row 1 the sequence yo, p2 is worked as: yarn over, then purl 2 (yarn is already in front for the purls).

Cast on CO 40 sts. (8 border + 24 lace + 8 border = 40 ✓)

Rep Rows 1–8 until the piece measures 58" (147 cm) from the cast-on edge, ending after a Row 8 (WS). Remove markers on the last WS row if you prefer.

Bind off BO all sts knitwise. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail, and pull through the last stitch.

Finishing

Weave in ends on the WS with the tapestry needle.

Wet-block the scarf: soak in lukewarm water until fully wet, press out excess water in a towel (do not wring), then pin to 9" × 60" (23 × 152 cm). Pin the eyelets open so the chevron diagonals show. Let dry completely before unpinning.

The garter borders will stay firm; the center panel will bloom into a soft, airy chevron. No seaming required.
