# Classic Garter Stitch Scarf

## MATERIALS
- 250g worsted weight yarn (such as Stylecraft Special DK or King Cole Big Value)
- 5.0mm (UK size 6, US size 8) knitting needles
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors

## PATTERN

**Cast On**
Cast on 36 stitches using your preferred method (long-tail cast on recommended).

**Body of Scarf**
Row 1: Knit all stitches.
Row 2: Knit all stitches.

Repeat these 2 rows (which are identical in garter stitch) until your scarf measures approximately 150cm (59") from the cast-on edge, or until you have enough yarn left for casting off plus weaving in ends.

**Note:** Garter stitch creates a lovely textured fabric that lies flat and doesn't curl at the edges - perfect for a scarf! Every row is simply knit across, making this an ideal project for beginning knitters.

**Tips for Success:**
- Count your stitches every few rows to ensure you haven't accidentally increased or decreased
- Place a stitch marker after every 10 stitches when casting on to make counting easier
- The fabric will seem quite short initially but will relax and lengthen when blocked
- Keep your tension consistent - not too tight or too loose

**Cast Off**
Knit 2 stitches, *pass the first stitch over the second stitch, knit 1 stitch*; repeat from * until 1 stitch remains. Cut yarn leaving a 15cm (6") tail and pull through the last stitch.

## FINISHING

**Weaving in Ends**
Using a yarn needle, weave in all ends securely on the wrong side of the work. Weave ends through several stitches in different directions to ensure they won't come loose.

**Blocking**
Soak the scarf in cool water with a small amount of wool wash for 15-20 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring). Lay flat on towels and pin to measurements, ensuring edges are straight. Allow to dry completely.

**Final Touch**
Give your scarf a gentle steam press if desired, being careful not to flatten the lovely garter stitch texture completely.
