# CLASSIC STOCKINETTE CARDIGAN

A timeless v-neck cardigan worked in worsted weight yarn featuring clean lines and comfortable fit. Perfect for layering or wearing on its own.

## MATERIALS
- **Yarn:** Approximately 1200 (1400, 1600, 1800, 2000) yards worsted weight yarn
- **Needles:** US 7 (4.5mm) straight or circular needles for main body
- **Needles:** US 5 (3.75mm) straight or circular needles for ribbing
- **Notions:** 7 (7, 8, 8, 9) buttons, ¾" diameter
- **Tools:** Tapestry needle, stitch markers, stitch holders or waste yarn

20 stitches and 26 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch on US 7 needles

## BACK
Using smaller needles, CO 92 (100, 108, 116, 124) sts.

**Ribbing:**
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.
Row 2 (WS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for 2", ending with a WS row.

Change to larger needles.

**Body:**
Work in St st until piece measures 15 (15½, 16, 16½, 17)" from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

**Armhole Shaping:**
BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 80 (86, 92, 98, 104) sts remain.

Dec 1 st at each end of next RS row, then every other row 4 (5, 6, 7, 8) more times. 70 (74, 78, 82, 86) sts remain.

Continue even until armhole measures 8 (8½, 9, 9½, 10)", ending with a WS row.

**Shoulder Shaping:**
BO 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts at beginning of next 4 rows.

## LEFT FRONT

**Armhole and V-neck Shaping:**

Purl 1 row.

Dec 1 st at armhole edge on next RS row, then every other row 4 (5, 6, 7, 8) more times. 37 (39, 41, 43, 45) sts remain.

AT THE SAME TIME, when armhole measures 2 (2½, 3, 3½, 4)", begin V-neck shaping:

Dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 12 (13, 13, 14, 15) times. 25 (26, 28, 29, 30) sts remain.

Continue even until armhole measures same as back.

**Shoulder Shaping:**
BO 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts at beginning of next 2 RS rows.
BO 6 (7, 7, 7, 7) sts at beginning of next RS row.
BO remaining 7 (7, 7, 8, 7) sts.

## RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing all shaping (work armhole shaping on WS rows and shoulder shaping on WS rows).

## SLEEVES (make 2)
Using smaller needles, CO 44 (44, 48, 48, 52) sts.

**Ribbing:**
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.
Row 2 (WS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for 2", ending with a WS row.

Change to larger needles.

**Body:**
Work in St st, inc 1 st at each end every 6th row 16 (17, 17, 18, 18) times. 76 (78, 82, 84, 88) sts.

Continue even until sleeve measures 17 (17½, 18, 18½, 19)" from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

**Cap Shaping:**
BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 64 (64, 66, 66, 68) sts remain.

Dec 1 st at each end every other row 18 (18, 19, 19, 20) times. 28 sts remain.

Dec 1 st at each end every row 8 times. 12 sts remain.

BO remaining sts.

## BUTTON BANDS

**Button Band (Right Front for Women, Left Front for Men):**
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 120 (124, 128, 132, 136) sts along front edge.

Row 1 (WS): K2, *p2, k2; repeat from * across.
Row 2 (RS): P2, *k2, p2; repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 1-2 twice more.
BO in ribbing pattern.

**Buttonhole Band:**
Work as for Button Band until 3 rows of ribbing are complete.

**Buttonhole Row (RS):** Work in ribbing pattern, creating buttonholes as follows:
- Work 4 sts, *BO 2 sts, work 16 (17, 17, 18, 18) sts in pattern; repeat from * 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) more times, BO 2 sts, work to end.

**Next Row (WS):** Work in ribbing pattern, CO 2 sts over each set of bound-off sts.

Work 2 more rows in ribbing pattern.
BO in ribbing pattern.

**Neckband:**
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 84 (88, 92, 96, 100) sts around neck edge, beginning and ending at center of button bands.

Row 1 (WS): *K2, p2; repeat from * across.
Row 2 (RS): *P2, k2; repeat from * across.
Repeat Rows 1-2 twice more.
BO in ribbing pattern.

## FINISHING

**Assembly:**
1. Block all pieces to measurements
2. Sew shoulder seams
3. Set in sleeves, matching center of sleeve to shoulder seam
4. Sew side and sleeve seams
5. Sew button bands to front edges, with buttonhole band overlapping button band at bottom edge

**Final Details:**
- Sew buttons opposite buttonholes
- Weave in all ends
- Steam lightly if desired
