# Classic Stockinette Cardigan

## MATERIALS
- **Yarn:** 1200 (1300, 1400, 1500, 1600) yards worsted weight yarn
- **Needles:** US 7 (4.5mm) for main body and sleeves, US 5 (3.75mm) for ribbing
- **Notions:** 6 buttons (¾" diameter), stitch markers, tapestry needle, cable needle (optional for temporary holders)
- **Gauge:** 20 stitches and 26 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch on US 7 needles

## GAUGE
20 stitches and 26 rows = 4" (10cm) in stockinette stitch on US 7 needles.
**Always work a gauge swatch and adjust needle size if necessary.**

Repeat Rows 1-2 for 2.5", ending with a WS row.

### Body
Change to larger needles.
**Next row (RS):** Knit.
**Next row (WS):** Purl.
Continue in stockinette stitch until piece measures 15 (15, 15.5, 15.5, 16)" from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

### Armhole Shaping
**Next row (RS):** BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 78 (86, 94, 102, 110) sts remain.
**Decrease row (RS):** K2, ssk, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. 76 (84, 92, 100, 108) sts.

### Shoulder and Neck Shaping
**Next row (RS):** BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts, knit until 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) sts on right needle, BO center 20 (20, 22, 22, 24) sts, knit to end.
Working each shoulder separately:
**Left shoulder:** BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beginning of WS rows twice more. BO remaining 6 (6, 6, 6, 6) sts.
**Right shoulder:** Rejoin yarn at neck edge. BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beginning of RS rows twice more. BO remaining 6 (6, 6, 6, 6) sts.

## LEFT FRONT

### Ribbing
With smaller needles, CO 46 (50, 54, 58, 62) sts.
**Row 1 (RS):** *K2, p2; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
**Row 2 (WS):** *P2, k2; repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for 2.5", ending with a WS row.

### Body
Change to larger needles.
Work in stockinette stitch until piece measures same as back to armhole, ending with a WS row.

### Armhole Shaping
**Next row (RS):** BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts, knit to end. 40 (43, 46, 49, 52) sts.
**Next row (WS):** Purl.
**Decrease row (RS):** K2, ssk, knit to end. 39 (42, 45, 48, 51) sts.
**Next row (WS):** Purl.
Repeat last 2 rows 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) more times. 36 (38, 40, 42, 44) sts remain.

Continue even until armhole measures 6.5 (7, 7, 7.5, 7.5)", ending with a RS row.

### Neck Shaping
**Next row (WS):** BO 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) sts, purl to end. 28 (30, 31, 33, 34) sts.
**Decrease row (RS):** Knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. 27 (29, 30, 32, 33) sts.
**Next row (WS):** Purl.

### Shoulder Shaping

## RIGHT FRONT
Work as for left front, reversing all shaping (BO and decreases at opposite edges).

## SLEEVES (make 2)

### Ribbing
With smaller needles, CO 42 (42, 46, 46, 50) sts.
Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 2.5", ending with a WS row.

### Sleeve Body
Change to larger needles.
**Next row (RS):** Knit.
**Next row (WS):** Purl.
**Increase row (RS):** K2, yo, knit to last 2 sts, yo, k2. 44 (44, 48, 48, 52) sts.
Work 9 rows even.
Repeat last 10 rows 11 (12, 12, 13, 13) more times. 66 (68, 72, 74, 78) sts.

Continue even until sleeve measures 17.5 (18, 18.5, 19, 19.5)" from CO edge.

### Cap Shaping
BO 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 54 (54, 56, 56, 58) sts.
**Decrease row (RS):** K2, ssk, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2.
**Next row (WS):** Purl.
Repeat last 2 rows 15 (15, 16, 16, 17) more times. 22 sts remain.
BO 2 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. 14 sts remain.

## BUTTON BANDS

### Left Front Band (Buttonhole Band)
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 118 (122, 126, 130, 134) sts along left front edge.
**Row 1 (WS):** *K2, p2; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
**Row 2 (RS):** *P2, k2; repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2.
**Buttonhole row (WS):** Work 4 sts in pattern, *yo, k2tog, work 18 (19, 20, 21, 22) sts in pattern; repeat from * 4 more times, yo, k2tog, work to end.
Work 2 more rows in ribbing pattern. BO in pattern.

### Right Front Band
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 118 (122, 126, 130, 134) sts along right front edge.
Work 5 rows in k2, p2 ribbing. BO in pattern.

### Neckband
Sew shoulder seams. With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 18 sts along right front neck, 20 (20, 22, 22, 24) sts along back neck, and 18 sts along left front neck. 56 (56, 58, 58, 60) sts.
Work 5 rows in k2, p2 ribbing. BO in pattern.

## FINISHING
1. Block all pieces to measurements.
2. Sew shoulder seams.
3. Set in sleeves, easing cap to fit armhole.
4. Sew side and sleeve seams.
5. Work button bands and neckband as described above.
6. Sew on buttons opposite buttonholes.
7. Weave in all ends.
