# COZY HAT-SCARF COMBINATION

A charming beginner-friendly project combining a simple beanie hat with an attached scarf. Perfect for staying warm whilst keeping your hands free! This pattern includes instructions for hand knitting, crochet, and machine knitting methods.

## MATERIALS

**For Hand Knitting:**
- 450-500g DK weight yarn
- 4.0mm (UK 8/US 6) knitting needles
- 4.0mm (UK 8/US 6) circular needles, 40cm length (for hat)

## GAUGE (TENSION)

22 stitches and 28 rows = 10cm (4") in stocking stitch on 4.0mm needles

**IMPORTANT:** Always work a tension square before beginning. Adjust needle size if necessary to achieve correct gauge.

- **Hat circumference:** 56cm (22") - fits average adult head

### METHOD 1: HAND KNITTING

### CROCHET METHOD

**Scarf:**
1. Ch 22.
2. Row 1: Tr in 4th ch from hook, tr in each ch to end. (20 tr)
3. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first tr), turn, tr in each tr to end.
4. Repeat Row 2 until scarf measures 152cm (60") from beginning.
5. Fasten off.

**Hood:**
1. Ch 34.
2. Row 1: Tr in 4th ch from hook, tr in each ch to end. (32 tr)
3. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first tr), turn, tr in each tr to end.
4. Repeat Row 2 until hood measures 25cm (10") from beginning.
5. Fasten off.

### MACHINE KNITTING METHOD

**Scarf:**
1. Using WY, cast on 44 needles in working position.
2. Knit several rows of WY, then change to main yarn.
3. Set carriage to stocking stitch, tension dial to 5.
4. Knit until piece measures 152cm (60").
5. Knit several rows of WY and remove from machine.

**Hood:**
1. Using WY, cast on 66 needles in working position.
2. Knit several rows of WY, then change to main yarn.
3. Set carriage to stocking stitch, tension dial to 5.
4. Knit until piece measures 25cm (10").
5. Knit several rows of WY and remove from machine.

## FINISHING

1. **Block pieces:** Lay flat and steam lightly or wet block according to yarn care instructions.

2. **Attach hood to scarf:**
   - Find the centre point of your scarf (76cm/30" from each end).
   - Place one long edge of the hood piece against the scarf at the centre point.
   - Using a tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew the hood to the scarf using mattress stitch or backstitch, ensuring the attachment measures 20cm (8") along the scarf.

3. **Create hood shape:**
   - Fold the hood piece in half lengthwise, with the scarf attachment at the bottom centre.
   - Sew the top seam of the hood using mattress stitch, creating the hood shape.
   - The sides of the hood will remain open for a comfortable fit around the face.

4. **Finishing touches:**
   - Weave in all ends securely.
   - Give the completed piece a final gentle steam if needed.

**Helpful Tips:**
- The garter stitch creates a fabric that lies flat and won't curl
