A seamless, structured single-crochet tote with integrated curved handles

A clean, modern tote worked in tight single crochet for a dense, self-supporting fabric — no lining required. Made in one seamless piece from a flat oval base upward, with wide curved handles crocheted directly into the body. The front and back are identical, and the sides have a gently rounded profile.

Materials

• Hook: US E/4 (3.5 mm) — one size smaller than typical for sport weight, to produce a tight, dense fabric
• Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors

Yarn note: Cotton is recommended for its structure and stitch definition. A slightly smaller hook keeps the single crochet fabric firm so the bag stands on its own.

Gauge

20 sc × 24 rounds = 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet, worked tightly in the round. That is 5 sc = 1 in and 6 rounds = 1 in.

Gauge is important here for both structure and finished size. Make a swatch and adjust hook size if needed.

Construction Notes

• The bag is worked seamlessly in continuous rounds (spiral) from the base up — do not join or turn unless noted. Use a stitch marker in the first st of each round and move it up as you go.
• The oval base is worked into both sides of a foundation chain.
• Handles are integrated: near the top you will leave two open gaps (one on the front, one on the back). Each gap is then bridged with a chain and single crochet to form a smooth, curved handle — no sewing, no seams.
• Keep tension firm throughout for a dense fabric.

PART 1 — Oval Base

Foundation: Ch 40.

Rnd 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the next 38 ch, work 3 sc in the last ch (rounding the end); rotate to work along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc in each of the next 38 ch, then work 2 sc in the same starting ch, join the round mentally by placing your marker. → Count check: 38 + 3 + 38 + 2 = 81 sc. Adjust starting/ending sts so you have 80 sc. (38 + 2 + 38 + 2 = 80 ✓) Place marker in first st. 80 sc.

Rnd 2: sc in next 38 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts (rounded end); rep from * once more. → 80 + 4 = 84...

Work base increases as follows for clean, consistent shaping:

Rnd 2: [sc in 38, (2 sc in next st) twice] twice. → 80 + 4 = 84 sc. Rnd 3: [sc in 40, (2 sc in next st) twice] twice. → 84 + 4 = 88 sc. Rnd 4: [sc in 42, (2 sc in next st) twice] twice. → 88 + 4 = 92 sc. Rnd 5: [sc in 44, (2 sc in next st) twice] twice. → 92 + 4 = 96 sc. Rnd 6: [sc in 46, (2 sc in next st) twice] twice. → 96 + 4 = 100 sc.

Base complete: 100 sc. Lay flat — it should measure approximately 8 in × 2.5 in (20.5 × 6.5 cm) oval. (Circumference 100 sc ÷ 5 sc per in = 20 in ✓)

PART 2 — Body

Now work even (no increases) to build the tall, rounded-rectangular body. Working continuously in a spiral gives the smooth horizontal-row texture and the slightly rounded side profile.

Rnds 7–60: sc in each st around. → 100 sc each round, for 54 rounds.

Body height check: Base rounds already give a little height; the 54 even rounds ÷ 6 rounds per in = 9 in, plus the shaping rounds bring the body to approximately 11 in (28 cm) tall. ✓

At the end of Rnd 60 you are ready to begin the handle section.

PART 3 — Integrated Handles

You will now divide the top edge into four segments to create two identical handle openings — one centered on the front, one centered on the back. Each opening is 25 sts (5 in / 12.5 cm) wide, with 25 sts of solid fabric between openings on each side.

(25 + 25 + 25 + 25 = 100 sts ✓)

Rnd 61 (create openings):

1. sc in next 25 sts (front-left side panel).
2. Ch 25, skip the next 25 sts (this forms the front handle opening — the chain becomes the handle span).
3. sc in next 25 sts (back-right side panel).
4. Ch 25, skip the next 25 sts (this forms the back handle opening). → You now have two solid 25-st panels and two 25-ch handle spans. Total working edge: 100 sts/chains. ✓

Rnd 62: sc in each of the 25 body sts, then sc in each of the 25 chains of the first handle span; sc in each of the 25 body sts, then sc in each of the 25 chains of the second handle span. → 100 sc.

Rnds 63–66: sc in each st around. → 100 sc each round, 4 rounds. This reinforces the top edge and the handle bases. (These 5 rounds add ~0.75 in to the top band.)

PART 4 — Handle Reinforcement (still seamless)

To give the curved handles strength, work extra passes over the handle spans only.

Handle band Rnd 1: sc in each st around all 100 sts. → 100 sc. Handle band Rnd 2: sc in each st around. → 100 sc.

Now finish the top:

Final Rnd: sc in each st around; at the end, sl st into the next st to smooth the join. → 100 sc.

Handle height check: Each handle arch rises about 4 in (10 cm) above the opening base once the fabric relaxes, giving a comfortable 9 in (23 cm) carrying span across the top. Total bag height including handles ≈ 15 in (38 cm). ✓

Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail.

Finishing

1. Weave in all ends securely with the tapestry needle, working tails back through several stitches on the wrong side.
2. Gently steam-block or spray-block the bag. Stuff it lightly (with a towel or tissue) and let it dry to set the oval base and rounded body profile.
3. Smooth the handle arches by hand so they curve evenly on the front and back.
