Heavenly Gingham Kitty Scarf

A soft, light-blue rectangular scarf featuring cute colorwork bands of gingham checks, polka dots, ribbon bows, angel wings, and little cat faces. Perfect for adventurous beginners ready to try simple stranded knitting.

MATERIALS

Yarn: Worsted weight (approx. 220 yd / 200 m per 100 g)

• MC (Main Color): Light sky blue – 150 yd (137 m)
• CC1: Soft white – 70 yd (64 m)
• CC2: Pale pink – 40 yd (37 m)
• CC3: Light gray – 25 yd (23 m)
• CC4: Butter yellow (tiny accents) – 15 yd (14 m)

Needles: US 8 (5 mm) straight or circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

GAUGE

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in stockinette stitch colorwork, blocked.

Please swatch and block; adjust needle size if needed.

PATTERN

Notes for Beginners (Colorwork):

• Work all charted sections in stockinette (knit RS rows, purl WS rows).
• Carry unused yarn loosely across the back (stranding). Never pull floats tight.
• Catch floats every 4–5 stitches by twisting yarns.
• Read RS chart rows from right to left; WS chart rows from left to right.
• Garter borders (first & last 4 sts) are always worked in MC and never stranded.
• Change colors by dropping old yarn and picking up new; leave 6″ tails to weave later.

Cast On With MC, CO 36 sts.

Lower Border Rows 1–6: With MC, knit every stitch (garter stitch).

Main Body Place markers after first 4 sts and before last 4 sts if desired (border zones).

Work the following band sequence, always keeping the 4 border sts at each edge in MC garter (knit every row on those 4 sts only). The center 28 sts follow the charts in stockinette.

Band Sequence (repeat the full sequence 3 times total for length, then work Final Band):

FINISHING

1. Weave in all ends securely on the WS using tapestry needle. For colorwork tails, weave along matching color floats where possible.
2. Block gently: soak in lukewarm water with wool wash, roll in towel to remove excess water, pin to 8″ × 60″ measurements on blocking mats. Let dry completely. Blocking evens stranded fabric and opens the motifs.
3. Optional: Add 4″ fringe in MC at each short end (cut 8″ strands, attach 2–3 per stitch along CO and BO edges) for extra cuteness.
