Modern Two-Tone Structured Crochet Tote Bag

An intermediate seamless tote worked in dense single crochet (US terms). Cream/off-white lower half meets mustard yellow upper half at a clean horizontal color change. Flat rectangular base, straight sides, medium gusset, and two long seamless shoulder straps. Front and back are identical.

Gauge

22 sc × 24 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet, worked tightly.

Gauge is critical for a structured bag. Work a swatch; if fabric is floppy, drop a hook size. Verification: 22 sts ÷ 4 in = 5.5 sts/in; 24 rows ÷ 4 in = 6 rows/in.

Construction Notes

The bag is worked seamlessly from the bottom up:

1. The base is worked flat as a rectangle.
2. Stitches are picked up around all four edges to work the body in continuous rounds.
3. A clean color change from Color A to Color B occurs at the halfway point.
4. The top divides into four strap bases, each worked upward, then joined front-to-back into two loops.

Do NOT join rounds with slip stitches on the body — work in a continuous spiral and mark the start of each round.

PART 1 — The Base (Color A / Cream)

The base is a solid rectangle worked in rows.

Foundation: With Color A, ch 67.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (66 sc)

Verification: 66 sts ÷ 5.5 sts/in = 12 in wide ✓

Rows 2–13: ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in each st across. Turn. (66 sc each row)

You now have 13 rows.

Verification: 13 rows ÷ 6 rows/in ≈ 2.2 in… we need 4 in for the gusset base.

Continue:

Rows 14–24: ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (66 sc)

You now have 24 rows total.

Verification: 24 rows ÷ 6 rows/in = 4 in wide ✓ — base is 12 in × 4 in ✓

Do not fasten off.

PART 2 — Setting Up the Body Rounds (Color A)

You will now work around the entire perimeter of the base to begin the sides.

Round Setup: ch 1, then work sc evenly around all four edges of the rectangle as follows, placing a stitch marker at each corner:

• Long edge 1 (top of base): 66 sc (1 in each row-top… work 66 sc across the 66 sts)
• Corner: 1 sc into corner
• Short edge 1 (row-ends): 22 sc evenly along the 24 row-ends (work 22 sc; skip 2 rows evenly to keep count exact)
• Corner: 1 sc into corner
• Long edge 2 (foundation edge): 66 sc across the 66 foundation chains
• Corner: 1 sc into corner
• Short edge 2 (row-ends): 22 sc evenly along the 24 row-ends
• Corner: 1 sc into corner

Total body round = 66 + 22 + 66 + 22 = 176 sc.

Verification: 2 × (66 + 22) = 2 × 88 = 176 sc ✓ Front/back = 66 sts each (12 in ✓); each gusset = 22 sts (4 in ✓).

Place a marker at the start of the round (one back corner). This marks the beginning of the continuous spiral.

PART 3 — The Body (Continuous Rounds)

Work in a continuous spiral. Move the corner markers up as you reach them each round to keep the rectangular shape crisp.

Lower Half — Color A (Cream)

Rounds 1–39: sc in each st around. (176 sc each round)

Height check: rounds are worked in a spiral (1 row per round). 39 rounds ÷ 6 rows/in = 6.5 in — the lower cream half ✓

On the very last stitch of Round 39, complete the final yarn-over with Color B (invisible color change). Drop Color A (carry loosely up inside, or fasten off and weave in later).

Color Change (Clean Horizontal Line)

Because the body is a continuous spiral, work the first round of Color B in BLO to produce a crisp, straight color line on the outside:

Round 40 (Color B): working in BLO, sc in each st around. (176 sc)

Upper Half — Color B (Mustard Yellow)

Rounds 41–78: working in both loops, sc in each st around. (176 sc each round)

Height check: Color B section = rounds 40–78 = 39 rounds ÷ 6 rows/in = 6.5 in ✓ Total body height: 6.5 + 6.5 = 13 in ✓

At the end of Round 78, sl st into the next st to level the round. Do NOT fasten off.

PART 4 — Strap Bases & Straps (Color B)

The 176 sts of the top rim divide as follows for symmetric straps:

Each strap base spans a portion of the front and back panels. On the front (66 sts): strap bases sit over sts 14–29 and 38–53, each 16 sts wide, with a 12-st gap between them and ~13 sts to each side edge.

Verification per front panel: 13 (side) + 16 (strap) + 12 (center gap) + 16 (strap) + 9 = 66… adjust to symmetry: 12 + 16 + 10 + 16 + 12 = 66 ✓. Use 12 side / 16 strap / 10 center / 16 strap / 12 side.

Repeat the identical layout on the back panel (front = back ✓).

Working Each Strap

Rejoin Color B at the first strap-base stitch.

Strap Row 1: ch 1, sc in each of the 16 strap-base sts. Turn. (16 sc)

Strap Rows 2–120: ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (16 sc)

Strap length: 120 rows ÷ 6 rows/in = 20 in ✓ Strap width: 16 sts ÷ 5.5 sts/in ≈ 1.5 in ✓ (a wide, sturdy strap — worked in BLO or both loops per preference)

Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30 cm) tail for seaming.

Repeat for all four strap bases (2 front, 2 back), making four 20 in straps of 16 sc.

Note: Alternatively, each front-and-back pair may be joined into a single continuous loop; here we make four half-straps and seam each front strap to its matching back strap to form two shoulder loops.

PART 5 — Joining the Straps

Lay the bag flat. Match the right front strap to the right back strap, and the left front strap to the left back strap.

For each pair:

1. Align the strap ends stitch-for-stitch (16 sts to 16 sts).
2. Using the mattress/whip stitch and the reserved tail, seam the two ends together to form one continuous shoulder loop.
3. Reinforce the seam with a second pass for strength.

You now have two sturdy shoulder loops, each formed from two 20 in straps → total loop circumference ≈ 40 in of strap, comfortable for shoulder carry.

PART 6 — Finishing

1. Top Rim: Rejoin Color B at any point on a strap gap. Work 1 round of sc across all non-strap top edges (front center gaps, back center gaps, and both gussets) for a clean finished rim. Sl st to join; fasten off.
2. Weave in all ends securely, especially at the color change and strap seams.
3. Block the bag: dampen, shape into a crisp rectangular form with square corners, and let dry fully. Cotton holds structure well after blocking.
4. Optional lining: For extra rigidity, cut fabric to the base (12 × 4 in) and body panels (allowing ½ in seam allowance) and hand-sew inside.
