# Rainbow Cloche Hat

A cheerful fitted hat featuring all the colors of the rainbow! This cloche is worked from the crown down in joined rounds for clean color stripes, with a gently flared brim for a vintage-inspired silhouette.

## SIZES
Adult Small/Medium (Medium/Large)
Finished circumference: 21 (23)" unstretched, designed to fit 21-22 (23-24)" head circumference

## MATERIALS
**Yarn:** Worsted weight yarn (#4) in 7 rainbow colors
- Color A (Red): 60 (70) yards
- Color B (Orange): 50 (60) yards  
- Color C (Yellow): 50 (60) yards
- Color D (Green): 50 (60) yards
- Color E (Blue): 50 (60) yards
- Color F (Indigo): 50 (60) yards
- Color G (Violet): 60 (70) yards
- **Total yardage:** 370 (440) yards

**Hook:** US Size H/8 (5.0mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

**Notions:** 
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch markers (optional but helpful)

## GAUGE
16 stitches and 9 rounds = 4" in double crochet worked in the round

## PATTERN NOTES
1. Hat is worked from crown down in joined rounds. Ch 2 at beginning of round does NOT count as a stitch throughout.
2. Join each round with sl st to first dc, then ch 2 to begin next round.
3. For clean color changes: Complete last round of old color until 2 loops remain on hook of final sl st, yarn over with new color and pull through to complete sl st. Fasten off old color, leaving 6" tail for weaving in.
4. Stitch count is provided at end of each round in parentheses.
5. Crown is worked with evenly distributed increases to create a flat circle, then sides are worked even.
6. Mark the beginning of each round if helpful.

### CROWN

**With Color A (Red):**

**Round 1:** Make a magic ring, ch 2 (does not count as st), work 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. Pull ring closed. (12 dc)

**Round 2:** Ch 2, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc)

**Round 3:** Ch 2, dc in same st as joining, dc in next st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

**Round 4:** Ch 2, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 2 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 dc)

**Change to Color B (Orange):**

**Round 5:** Ch 2, dc in same st as joining, dc in next 3 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (60 dc)

**Continuing with Color G (Violet):**

**Round 22:** Ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 10 (11) sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 10 (11) sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (96 (104) dc)

**Round 23:** Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join with sl st to first hdc. (96 (104) hdc)

**Round 24 (Edging):** Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, *skip next st, 5 dc in next st (shell made), skip next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around, adjusting last repeat as needed to complete pattern, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off, leaving 12" tail.

## FINISHING

1. Weave in all ends securely, especially at color changes. For color change tails at the join, weave through the back of stitches in the same round to keep the join area neat.

2. Block hat lightly by misting with water and placing on a bowl or balloon approximately the size of the wearer's head. Allow to dry completely.

3. If desired, steam block gently with iron held 1" above fabric (do not touch iron to fabric directly). This will even out stitches and help the brim hold its shape.

## DESIGN NOTES

- To adjust the depth of the hat, work more or fewer rounds in the sides section (Rounds 9-21). Each round adds approximately 0.5" to the depth.
- For a wider brim, work Round 22 twice before proceeding to Round 23.
- For a more slouchy style, work additional rounds without increases after Round 8 before beginning the sides section.
- The shell edging creates a decorative, slightly ruffled edge that helps the brim flare gently.

**Pattern Math Verification:**
- Small/Medium: 88 sts ÷ 4 sts/inch = 22" circumference ✓
- Medium/Large: 96 sts ÷ 4 sts/inch = 24" circumference ✓
- Crown increases: Each round adds 12 sts (6 increase points × 2) ✓
- Brim increases: 96(104) is 8 additional sts for gentle flare ✓
