## Materials

**Yarn:** Worsted weight (CYC #4); ~210 yds/100 g per skein, smooth plied wool or wool blend recommended.

- **MC (Main Color):** 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6) skeins — approx. 800 (850, 950, 1000, 1150, 1200) yds
- **CC1 (Contrast 1):** 1 skein — approx. 80 yds (all sizes)

## Pattern Notes

- Vest is worked flat in two pieces. Back is plain stockinette with striped shoulders; Front features a centered 24-st cable panel and striped shoulders flanking the V-neck.
- Carry CC yarns up the side edge, twisting every 2 rows to avoid long floats.
- All decreases at armholes/V-neck are worked 2 sts in from edge for clean seaming.

## BACK

With US 6 needles and MC, CO 74 (82, 90, 98, 106, 114) sts.

**Establish 2×2 Rib:**
- **Row 1 (RS):** k2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.

Work in 2×2 Rib for 2.5" / 6.5 cm, ending with a WS row.

**Change to US 8 needles** and work in stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 13 (13.5, 14, 14.5, 15, 15.5)" / 33 (34.5, 35.5, 37, 38, 39.5) cm from CO, ending with a WS row.

### Armhole Shaping (Begin Stripe Sequence)
At start of armhole shaping, **begin Stripe Sequence**.

- **Row 1 (RS):** BO 4 sts, k to end.
- **Row 2 (WS):** BO 4 sts, p to end.

- **Dec Row (RS):** k2, ssk, k to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. *2 sts dec.*

Continue even in stockinette, **maintaining Stripe Sequence**, until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5)" / 20.5 (21.5, 23, 24, 25.5, 26.5) cm, ending with a WS row. Stripes end here; complete remainder of back in MC if any rows remain.

### Back Neck & Shoulders
- **Row 1 (RS):** k 18 (20, 22, 24, 27, 30), join a second ball of MC and BO center 24 (26, 28, 30, 30, 30) sts, k to end.

Working both shoulders at once:
- **Row 2 (WS):** purl across, BO 3 sts at each neck edge.

*15 (17, 19, 21, 24, 27) sts each shoulder.*

BO all sts loosely.

With US 6 needles and MC, CO 78 (86, 94, 102, 110, 118) sts.

**Establish Rib with Cable Setup (RS):**
- k2, *p2, k2; rep from * to 28 sts before center, **place cable setup**, continuing in 2×2 rib to end.

For simplicity, work all sts in 2×2 Rib for 2.5" / 6.5 cm, ending with a WS row.

**Change to US 8 needles. Set up body pattern (RS):**

### Armhole Shaping (Begin Stripe Sequence)
**Begin Stripe Sequence** in stockinette sections only; **continue Cable Panel C1 in MC throughout** (this isolates stripes to the shoulders/sides for visual clarity).

- **Row 1 (RS):** BO 4 sts, work in pattern to end.
- **Row 2 (WS):** BO 4 sts, work in pattern to end.
*70 (78, 86, 94, 102, 110) sts.*

- **Dec Row (RS):** k2, ssk, work in pattern to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2.
- **Next row (WS):** work even in pattern.

Repeat last 2 rows 2 (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) more times.

Work 2 rows even, ending with a WS row.

### V-Neck Shaping
**Next Row (RS):** Work 32 (35, 38, 41, 44, 47) sts in pattern, join a second ball of MC, BO center 0 sts (i.e., simply divide for V-neck — see note), work to end.

*Note: For a clean V-neck centered in cable panel, on the next RS row work to 1 st before center of cable panel, k2tog (the 2 center "p" sts), then immediately divide. For simplicity, divide work in half: 32 (35, 38, 41, 44, 47) sts each side.*

**Working both sides at once with separate balls of yarn:**

- **Neck Dec Row (RS):** Right side: work to last 4 sts of right-front, k2tog, k2. Left side: k2, ssk, work to end.
- Work neck dec every RS row 4 times, then every 4th row until 15 (17, 19, 21, 24, 27) sts remain on each shoulder.

**Maintain Stripe Sequence** throughout V-neck shaping (stripes appear on the shoulder "wings" of the V). Once Stripe Sequence is complete, continue in MC.

When armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5)" / 20.5 (21.5, 23, 24, 25.5, 26.5) cm, BO each shoulder loosely.

*Math check: shoulder sts front = back = 15 (17, 19, 21, 24, 27) ✓*

## FINISHING

### Blocking
Wet block both pieces to schematic measurements. Pin cable panel firmly to open up texture.

### Seaming
- Sew shoulder seams using mattress stitch, matching stripe rows precisely.
- Sew side seams from hem to start of armhole.

### Armhole Bands (make 2)
With US 6 needles, MC, and RS facing, beginning at underarm seam, pick up and knit **84 (88, 92, 96, 100, 104) sts** evenly around armhole (approximately 3 sts for every 4 rows along straight edges, 1 st per BO st).

*Make sure st count is a multiple of 4 for 2×2 rib.*

Join in the round, pm for beginning of round.
- **Round 1:** *k2, p2; rep from * around.
Work 6 more rounds in established 2×2 rib. BO loosely in pattern.

### V-Neck Band
With US 6 circular needle, MC, and RS facing, beginning at right shoulder seam, pick up and knit:
- ~38 (40, 42, 44, 46, 48) sts down left front of V,
- pm at center V (place a removable marker just before the center st),
- pick up 1 st at center V (this will be the decrease st),
- ~38 (40, 42, 44, 46, 48) sts up right front of V,
- ~36 (38, 40, 42, 42, 42) sts across back neck.

Total: **113 (119, 125, 131, 135, 139) sts** (must be odd to center the V dec).

Join in the round.
- **Round 1:** Work 2×2 rib to 1 st before center st, sl 2 tog kwise, k1, pass slipped sts over (centered double dec), continue in rib to end.
- Continue in rib, working centered double dec at center V every round, for 6 rounds total.
- BO loosely in pattern, maintaining centered dec on BO round.

### Final Steps
Weave in all ends, paying special attention to color changes at side seams. Steam-block bands lightly if needed.

## Designer's Notes

- The stripe sequence is intentionally placed to crown the shoulder yoke — it draws the eye upward, balancing the textural weight of the cable panel below.
- For a bolder look, swap CC1/CC2 for high-contrast colors (e.g., charcoal MC with mustard and rust).
- To convert to a longer tunic vest, add 2–4" of length before armhole shaping (allow ~30 g extra MC per 2").
