# SWEET TREAT HAT
## Ice Cream Cone Novelty Hat

**A whimsical bottom-up hat that looks like an ice cream cone with dripping chocolate, frosting, and a cherry on top!**

## MATERIALS

**Yarn**: Worsted weight (#4 medium) yarn
- **MC (Cone - Light Tan)**: 50 (55, 60) yards
- **CC1 (Frosting - Soft Pink)**: 70 (80, 90) yards
- **CC2 (Chocolate - Dark Brown)**: 35 (40, 45) yards
- **CC3 (Whipped Cream - White)**: 25 (30, 35) yards
- **Accent (Cherry/Sprinkles - Bright Red)**: 15 yards (all sizes)

*Suggested yarns: Cascade 220, Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, or similar smooth worsted*

**Machine**: Standard gauge knitting machine with ribber attachment
- Main bed: 200 needles
- Ribber bed: 200 needles

**Tension Settings**:
- Ribbing (MC): T4/T4 (main bed/ribber)
- Stockinette (CC1, CC3): T6
- Fair Isle (CC2/CC1): T7
- Bind-off: T8

**Tools & Notions**:
- Ravel cord and cast-on comb with weights (approx. 6-8 claw weights)
- Transfer tool (single prong and 3-prong)
- Latch tool for bind-off
- Tapestry needle for duplicate stitch and seaming
- Stitch markers
- Waste yarn (contrasting color)
- Row counter
- Small amount of fiberfill (for cherry)
- Optional: circular knitting attachment or manual cranking for tubular knitting

## GAUGE

**Stockinette** (main bed only, T6):  
20 stitches × 28 rows = 4" (10 cm)

**1×1 Rib** (ribber attached, T4/T4):  
22 stitches × 32 rows = 4" (10 cm), slightly stretched

**Key**:

**Reading the chart**: 
- Read RS (odd) rows from right to left
- Read WS (even) rows from left to right
- Repeat the 10-stitch pattern across the full needle count
- Chart shows dripping effect with chocolate "drips" descending from top

**Repeat**: 
- Toddler: 9 full repeats (90 sts)
- Child: 10 full repeats (100 sts)
- Adult: 11 full repeats (110 sts)

## PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

### MACHINE SETUP

1. **Bed Configuration**: Attach ribber to main bed. Set pitch lever to P (standard pitch).

2. **Carriage Setup**: 
   - Install ribber carriage beneath main carriage
   - Set both carriages to knit in both directions
   - Engage slip levers when indicated

3. **Needle Selection**:
   - **Toddler**: Use needles from position -45 to +45 (90 needles total)
   - **Child**: Use needles from position -50 to +50 (100 needles total)
   - **Adult**: Use needles from position -55 to +55 (110 needles total)

4. **Ribber Needle Arrangement**: Set for 1×1 rib (every other needle in work on each bed, with ribber needles offset between main bed needles)

### SECTION 1: WAFFLE CONE BRIM (Ribbed Band)

**Setup with Ravel Cord Cast-On**:

1. Thread ravel cord through all selected needles on main bed. Hang cast-on comb with 6-8 claw weights evenly distributed.

2. Using **MC (Tan)** yarn, set tension dial to **T4** on main bed, **T4** on ribber.

3. With ribber needles arranged for 1×1 rib, manually wrap first row around needles (alternating main bed/ribber) OR use circular cast-on if available.

4. Hang additional weights (total weight should be 6-8 claws for worsted yarn).

**Knitting the Brim**:

5. **RC 000**. Set carriage at **COL** (carriage on left). Knit 1 row to right (**COR**).

6. Knit 1 row to left (**COL**). Check that rib fabric is forming correctly. Adjust weights if needed.

7. Continue knitting in 1×1 rib:
   - **All sizes**: Knit to **RC 056** (2"/5cm of ribbing)

8. **RC 056, COR**. The ribbed "waffle cone" texture is complete.

**Transition to Main Bed Only**:

9. Transfer all ribber stitches to main bed using transfer tool:
   - Work from left to right
   - Each ribber needle stitch transfers to the main bed needle directly above/in front of it
   - Remove ribber carriage and swing ribber bed down (if machine allows) OR lock ribber carriage out of work

10. Verify stitch count on main bed:
    - Toddler: 90 sts
    - Child: 100 sts
    - Adult: 110 sts

### SECTION 2: FROSTING BODY (Pink Stockinette)

**Change to Pink Yarn**:

11. Break **MC (Tan)** leaving 6" tail. Join **CC1 (Pink)**.

12. Set main bed tension to **T6**. Remove ribber carriage completely or ensure it's disengaged.

13. **RC 056, COR**. Using main carriage only (set to stockinette), knit to **COL**.

14. Continue in stockinette stitch (every row knits):
    - **Toddler**: Knit to **RC 140** (3"/7.5cm of pink, total 84 rows)
    - **Child**: Knit to **RC 168** (4"/10cm of pink, total 112 rows)
    - **Adult**: Knit to **RC 196** (5"/12.5cm of pink, total 140 rows)

15. At completion, carriage should be at **COL** for next section.

### SECTION 3: CHOCOLATE DRIP (Fair Isle Colorwork)

**Setup Fair Isle Carriage**:

16. **RC at 140/168/196** depending on size, **COL**.

17. Thread **CC1 (Pink)** in Feeder A, **CC2 (Brown)** in Feeder B.

18. Set tension to **T7** (looser for Fair Isle).

19. If using punchcard machine: Insert Card for Chart A (10-st repeat, 14 rows). Lock card on Row 1.
    
    If using electronic machine: Program Chart A pattern into memory.

**Knitting the Drips**:

20. Release card/activate pattern. Knit Row 1 of Chart A to **COR**.

21. Continue following Chart A:
    - Knit all 14 rows of chart (Rows 1-14)
    - Check that brown "drips" are forming correctly
    - Ensure floats on wrong side are no longer than 7 stitches (pattern is designed within this limit)

22. **For taller sizes, repeat Chart A**:
    - **Toddler**: Knit Chart A rows 1-14 twice = 28 rows total (to **RC 168**)
    - **Child**: Knit Chart A rows 1-14 twice = 28 rows total (to **RC 196**)
    - **Adult**: Knit Chart A rows 1-14 three times = 42 rows total (to **RC 238**)

23. At completion:
    - Toddler: **RC 168, COL**
    - Child: **RC 196, COL**
    - Adult: **RC 238, COL**

24. Break **CC2 (Brown)**, leaving 6" tail. Continue with **CC1 (Pink)** only.

25. Remove Fair Isle carriage/card. Return to standard stockinette carriage settings at **T6**.

26. Knit 2 rows in **CC1 (Pink)** to stabilize.

### SECTION 4: WHIPPED CREAM CROWN (White with Shaping)

**Change to White Yarn**:

27. Break **CC1 (Pink)**, leaving 6" tail. Join **CC3 (White)**.

28. **Current RC: 170/198/240** (after 2 stabilizing rows), **COR**.

**Crown Decrease Round 1**:

29. Set carriage for hold position. Using transfer tool, decrease evenly around:
    - **Toddler**: Decrease 18 sts (every 5th stitch) = 72 sts remain
    - **Child**: Decrease 20 sts (every 5th stitch) = 80 sts remain
    - **Adult**: Decrease 22 sts (every 5th stitch) = 88 sts remain

    *Method: Transfer every 5th stitch to adjacent needle (creating a 2-stitch "tuck"), then bring empty needle to hold position (HP).*

30. Knit 6 rows stockinette in **CC3 (White)** at **T6**.
    - New RC: 176/204/246

**Crown Decrease Round 2**:

31. **RC 176/204/246, COR**. Decrease again:
    - **Toddler**: Decrease 18 sts (every 4th stitch) = 54 sts remain
    - **Child**: Decrease 20 sts (every 4th stitch) = 60 sts remain
    - **Adult**: Decrease 22 sts (every 4th stitch) = 66 sts remain

32. Knit 6 rows stockinette.
    - New RC: 182/210/252

**Crown Decrease Round 3**:

33. **RC 182/210/252, COR**. Decrease again:
    - **Toddler**: Decrease 18 sts (every 3rd stitch) = 36 sts remain
    - **Child**: Decrease 20 sts (every 3rd stitch) = 40 sts remain
    - **Adult**: Decrease 22 sts (every 3rd stitch) = 44 sts remain

34. Knit 4 rows stockinette.
    - New RC: 186
