• Needles: US 8 / 5 mm straight or circular needles (a 24–32 in circular is recommended to hold all stitches comfortably; work back and forth)
• Notions: Yarn bobbins for intarsia, tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers (optional)

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, blocked.

Construction Notes

The blanket is worked flat in one piece from the bottom edge up:

1. A garter-stitch bottom border.
2. A main body with a garter-stitch border on each side and a stockinette center panel that carries the charted motif.
3. A garter-stitch top border.

Border stitches: The first 7 and last 7 stitches of every row are worked in garter stitch (knit every row) to create a flat, non-curling frame. The center 121 stitches are worked in stockinette (except where the border rows are all garter).

• Where it is placed: The attached chart corresponds to the center 121-stitch panel during the Charted Motif Section (Body Rows 21–188, see below). The motif itself is 60 stitches wide and is centered within the 121-stitch panel.
• Centering math: (121 − 60) ÷ 2 = 30.5. Work 30 sts in MC before the chart and 31 sts in MC after the chart on each center-panel row. (30 + 60 + 31 = 121 ✓, plus the 7-st borders on each side = 135 ✓.)
• How to read the chart (knitting, worked flat):
  • Each square = 1 stitch; each row of squares = 1 row of knitting.
  • Read RS (odd) rows from RIGHT to LEFT.
  • Read WS (even) rows from LEFT to RIGHT.
  • Follow the chart's color key to know which color each square uses (MC background, CA/CB/CC for the plane, helicopter, and accents).
  • RS rows are knit; WS rows are purl — the chart shows color placement only, the fabric stays in stockinette.
• Color / yarn management (intarsia):
  • Use a separate bobbin/length of yarn for each color block. Do not carry colors across the back of large areas.
  • When changing colors, bring the new color up from under the old color to twist the yarns at each change — this "lock" prevents holes.
  • Keep floats loose; do not pull tightly at color joins or the blanket will pucker.

Pattern Instructions

Bottom Border

With MC, cast on 135 sts.

• Rows 1–10: Knit every stitch across (garter stitch). (10 rows)

Main Body — Border-Only Rows (before the chart)

Establish the side borders with plain stockinette center:

• RS rows (odd): K7 (border), knit 121 (center), k7 (border).
• WS rows (even): K7 (border), purl 121 (center), k7 (border).

Work in this pattern for Rows 11–20 (10 rows) with MC only.

Charted Motif Section (Body Rows 21–188)

Continue the border pattern, and now work the attached chart across the center panel.

For every row in this section:

• RS rows: K7 (border) → k30 in MC → work the 60-st chart row (right to left) → k31 in MC → k7 (border).
• WS rows: K7 (border) → p31 in MC → work the 60-st chart row (left to right) → p30 in MC → k7 (border).

Work all rows of the attached chart in order. The chart occupies 168 rows (Rows 21–188).

Check: 168 rows ÷ 24 rows per 4 in × 4 = 28 in of charted motif height, comfortably centered in the body.

Main Body — Border-Only Rows (after the chart)

Return to plain stockinette center with MC only:

• RS rows: K7, knit 121, k7.
• WS rows: K7, purl 121, k7.

Work for Rows 189–206 (18 rows).

Top Border

• Rows 207–216: Knit every stitch across (garter stitch). (10 rows)

Bind off all 135 sts loosely knitwise.

Row total check: 10 (bottom border) + 10 (pre-chart) + 168 (chart) + 18 (post-chart) + 10 (top border) = 216 rows = 36 in ✓

Finishing

1. Weave in ends: Using a tapestry needle, weave in all yarn tails on the wrong side. Take extra care to secure intarsia color-change ends and close any small gaps at color joins.
2. Block: Gently wet-block or steam-block the finished blanket to smooth the stockinette center and even out the motif. Pin to 30 × 36 in (76 × 91 cm) and allow to dry flat. Blocking greatly improves the appearance of colorwork.
3. Inspect: Check the front of the motif for any loose stitches at color changes and snug them from the back if needed.

Care Instructions

Use a baby-safe, machine-washable worsted yarn if possible. Wash gently and dry flat to preserve shape and the crisp motif.

Tips for Beginners

• Practice the motif area first: If intarsia is new to you, knit a small swatch trying one color change before starting the blanket.
• Count often: Re-count your 135 stitches every few rows to catch errors early.
• Keep borders in garter: Never purl the first or last 7 stitches — the garter frame is what keeps your edges flat and tidy.
• Duplicate stitch option: For the tiniest details on the plane and helicopter, you can knit those stitches in MC and add the color later with duplicate stitch — a very beginner-friendly shortcut.
